Commissioned by the Kentucky Percussion Society’s Women in Percussion project, this arrangement of My Old Kentucky Home celebrates women by incorporating famous rhythms and styles from female percussionists throughout history. As the music progresses, quotes and tributes to Viola Smith, Karen Carpenter, and Catherine Betts can be heard amidst the Kentucky state song.
When performing this piece, be sure to use only one marimba. The ending sequence is only effective when all three performers are circling one another, as done in Catherine Betts arrangement of William Tell Overture.
Performing with one vibraphone is preferred, but optional.
