About me:
Hi Everyone! Thank you for taking a look at my website! Here I will provide some design challenges that I have completed this year. I hope to use the skills I have acquired to help teach K-8 students in the near future! I have been in college the last five years and am happy to say that I will be graduating this semester! I work at the grocery store and volunteer at a local elementary school in my free time. I also love to travel, the picture I decided to share was taken in Sweden last December! Next year I will be starting a credential program and going on to teach hopefully in the K-5 setting. I hope you enjoy my projects!
During Design Challenge 1: Zero Hunger
I was tasked with creating a comic strip using Pixton, which was completely new to me, to come up with a way to help with Hunger. I decided that making a compost bin would help with waste issues. Waste comtributes to the hunger of people all over the word because if something is thrown away it can not be eaten. For a compost bin, if food is wasted, it can be repurposed.
Design Challenge 2: Increasing Awareness of Pollution
( https://share.pixton.com/qevy0ih )
For this design challege I also created a comic strip using Pixton and spoke on the fact that trash in the ocean adds to pollution in San Diego county. In my Pixton I decided an idea to help with pollution would be orgainizing a clean up at the beach. Trash on the beach or in the ocean not only hurts our environment but also the environment of the creatures that live inside the ocean. Reducing plastic use would also help with pollution and waste. A simple way that someone can help would be using a reusable cup instead of plastic all the time.
Design Challenge 3: Tinkercad (How to help endangered species in SD County
( https://www.tinkercad.com/things/gaX1JCdybcE )
For this design challenge I decided that a way to help an endangered bird species in SD County would be to plant more trees so they have more places to build a nest.
Design Challenge 4: Awareness on STD Prevention
( https://www.tinkercad.com/things/67eoDRnE4SZ )
For this design challenge I decided to focus on STD prevention. With using Tinkercad to show that if pills are accessible then std would be more preventable and treatable. STD's are more common than they should be and the lack of accessablity to medication is an issue. If pills were more accessable then this issue could be helped for many that do not have the finances to go to a doctor.
Design Challenge 5: Food Waste
For this design challenge I decided to again talk about a compost and how it would help with food waste. This was different because scratch was used instead of a comic strip. This was fun to get familiar with scratch, it can be used almost as a game allowing those who see your projects to interact. I think this would be great in k-5 education when learning about coding. It was the most challenging platform for me because I have never coded but would be an excellent skill for students to learn.
Design Challenge 6: Different ways to recycle
This was by far my favorite project that I created this semester. This looked into items that can be reculed in different ways. If you think the item can be recycled then you click on it and it will disappear. This was my favorite because it allowed those who participated with it to see that even clothing can be 'recycled'. instead of throwing away old clothes donate or sell them.
Lesson Plan: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dSEPqPKZTio-KYNO4pCkDJYZKo7qnPZyfrbQu6lL81A/edit?usp=sharing
Here is my lesson plan for using Pixton to have students create a comic strip with a cause and effect. I also give an example project for them as well with my idea of creating a casue and effect. For my example two children want to play catch they go outside becasue they know they are not supposed to play inside, i then show what could have happened if they did not listen to their mother...
Example for Lesson plan: https://share.pixton.com/qj6esza
Here i provided a detailed example of a comic strip so that students could look at it before completing this assignment. I beleive that this example helps address the common core standard that i chose: Common Core: RI.4.3- Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text
Assesment Tool:

After completing the design challenge/ assignment in class the students will be asked to fill out a form to let me know how they felt about the assignment. This project was great becasue as well as addressing a common core standard the students were able to brainstorm with their classmates and share with a discussion after they all finished their projects.
Instructional Video: https://youtu.be/foXUpmSlqts
If a student missed class and was unable to do this assignment in class I created an instructional video to go over what they missed. In class I did not spend time reviewing on pixton because my students would have used it before this activity was done. I included a review of the site because if a student who was not there forgot how to use pixton they would not have me there to answer their questions.
