The Gathigia Family Life Center is a Christian nonprofit based in Kenya, committed to transforming the lives of underprivileged children through education, mentorship, skills training, and compassionate care.
Originally founded with a vision to establish a refuge for orphans, our mission has evolved in response to the Kenyan government's 2023 directive to phase out privately owned orphanages due to the growing global crisis of child trafficking. After much prayer, discernment, and guidance from our leadership, we have embraced a bold new direction.
“To empower and transform the lives of underprivileged children in Kenya—equipping them with education, life skills, and spiritual hope.”
We recognize that half of Kenya’s population lives in multidimensional poverty—a reality that goes far beyond income. Many children face barriers such as:
Poor literacy and school performance
Low self-esteem and motivation
Family hardship and lack of parental support
Sociocultural pressures—especially for girls—including early marriage, FGM, and child labor
These factors often result in school dropout, truancy, and a lifetime of economic and emotional struggle. We believe God has called us to step into this gap and offer both practical support and spiritual upliftment.
As we await full legal clearance and the activation of our Kenya-registered nonprofit entity (Gathigia Family Life Center – Company Limited by Guarantee), we are launching a pilot program in partnership with a local church in Kenya. This initiative will provide:
Free Saturday tuition sessions for underprivileged students
Nutritious meals during a shared lunch break
Volunteer-led mentorship and support
Our team is currently funding this project personally and welcomes your partnership—through prayer, giving, or hands-on service.
“We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can change one life—and one life can change a whole generation.”
The Gathigia Family Life Center was founded by Pastor Leah Gathigia Smithies, a woman whose personal testimony of pain, healing, and faith sparked a mission far beyond herself. After overcoming loss, trauma, and deep spiritual battles, Leah answered the call to serve the children of Kenya.
What began as a vision in her heart became a living outreach—supporting children and families with food, education, medical care, and prayer. Today, the Gathigia Family Life Center exists to walk with the vulnerable, nurture the next generation, and raise up strong, faith-filled leaders in Kenya.
“Out of my ashes, God birthed a garden.” — Pastor Leah
Her memoir, Leah, shares the full testimony of how Leah survived, healed, and was called to be a light in her community and the world. Today, Gathigia Family Life Center is the fruit of that calling.
“He lifted me from the ashes, so I could go back and rebuild what was broken.” — Leah Gathigia Smithies
