This project is conducted in collaboration with leading partners across Canada's nuclear industry and will investigate how waste streams generated by emerging small modular reactor (SMR) technologies influence the long-term performance of materials proposed for Canada's deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.
The successful candidate will investigate the corrosion behaviour of engineered barrier materials, including stainless steels, copper, carbon steel, and nickel-based alloys, using advanced electrochemical techniques and state-of-the-art surface characterization methods. Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in electrochemistry and corrosion science, including electrochemical testing and immersion experiments. Experience with scanning electrochemical probe microscopy (e.g., SECM or SECCM) and materials characterization techniques such as SEM/EDS, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and profilometry is considered an asset.
Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Experience working with industrial collaborators is advantageous, as the successful candidate will regularly interact with project partners, contribute to technical reports and publications, and mentor graduate students within a collaborative research environment.

Lab-based research skills: experience in electrochemical methods and scanning electrochemical probe microscopy, hands-on probe fabrication experience, and training on various complementary analytical and surface characterization tools (XPS, SEM/EDX, Raman Spectroscopy, Micro-CT, profilometry).
Soft research skills: Regular oral presentation practice at weekly group meetings, direct interactions with industry partners and scientists, networking opportunities at local (1 per year) and international conferences/symposia (1 per graduate degree), and leadership opportunities (student council, society student chapters)
