If you want a massive, rugged storage solution for heavy gear and family road trips across varied terrain, choose Garvee Rooftop Cargo Box; if you need a streamlined, aerodynamic carrier designed specifically for high-speed mountain driving and fuel efficiency, choose YSGDSEL 46"L.
• Garvee Rooftop Cargo Box: Its biggest strength is sheer volume with 13.5 cubic feet of space and a 135-pound weight capacity, but its trade-off is a heavier build that may impact fuel economy more than lighter alternatives.
• YSGDSEL 46"L: It excels in aerodynamic efficiency and lightweight rigidity using an ABS+PC alloy, though it offers less total cubic footage compared to the larger Garvee model.
• Best For: Choose the Garvee if your priority is hauling maximum luggage for camping or moving; choose the YSGDSEL if your priority is quiet highway cruising and minimizing drag on long mountain drives.
The Garvee Rooftop Cargo Box is built for those who prioritize raw capacity above all else. With dimensions reaching 67.7 inches in length and a staggering 13.5 cubic feet (382 liters) of internal volume, this unit is a beast of burden. It is designed to swallow everything from bulky winter tires and oversized tents to multiple suitcases for a family vacation. The hard-shell construction made from premium ABS material ensures that this cargo holds up against the elements, offering waterproof protection and UV resistance that stands up to sun exposure and rainstorms alike.
Its dual-side opening design is a practical feature for users who park in tight spaces where accessing one side might be blocked by another vehicle or a wall. You can swing the lid open from either the driver or passenger side, making loading and unloading significantly easier without needing to walk around the car twice. The inclusion of two keys and secure straps adds a layer of confidence when leaving your gear overnight at a trailhead or hotel. This heft, combined with its large surface area, means it will sit higher and catch more wind than a slimmer profile, which can subtly affect handling and fuel consumption on long journeys.
This product is ideal for the overlander or the family road-tripper who needs to pack an enormous amount of gear. If you are taking a trip where every piece of equipment matters and you have the roof rack clearance to handle a large, heavy box, this is the tool for the job. Conversely, if you are a solo traveler with just a backpack and a sleeping bag, or if you drive a smaller sedan where a 67-inch box feels unwieldy, this unit might be overkill. It is also worth noting that while it claims universal compatibility, the sheer size requires careful measurement of your specific roof rack system to ensure the crossbars can support the load and the mounting points align correctly.

The YSGDSEL 46"L is engineered for the driver who values the driving experience as much as the storage it provides. Its primary selling point is the focus on aerodynamics and efficiency. The streamlined profile is explicitly designed to minimize parasitic drag, which translates directly to better fuel economy on highway stretches. This makes it an excellent choice for long-distance touring where miles add up quickly. The proprietary ABS+PC alloy used in its construction delivers exceptional rigidity while keeping the overall weight lower than many competitors, helping to reduce the strain on your vehicle's roof structure and suspension.
One of the most compelling features for active users is the gas-assisted strut system on both sides. This mechanism allows the lid to stay securely elevated during loading without requiring you to manually prop it up or risk it slamming shut on your fingers. The hinge system incorporates stainless steel pins for repeated cycle durability, meaning it will withstand the daily wear and tear of frequent access. The dual-access strategy facilitates the placement of long items like fishing rods or tent poles right down the center of the 14-inch interior width. Furthermore, the central cam-lock mechanism engages multiple latching points simultaneously, offering robust security against prying attempts and ensuring the seal remains tight even at high speeds.
This carrier is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast who spends time on winding mountain roads or highways where noise and wind resistance are constant complaints. The reduced turbulence creates a quieter cabin environment, allowing for relaxed conversation and clear audio even at elevated speeds. The sealed perimeter gasket keeps moisture and dust ingress minimal, protecting sensitive electronics or dry clothes inside. However, if your primary need is to move a mountain of gear in a single trip, the 46-inch length and slightly smaller footprint compared to the Garvee might feel limiting. It is best suited for families or couples who travel frequently but carry a moderate amount of gear, prioritizing a smooth, efficient ride over maximum cubic capacity.
• Best for Maximum Storage Volume → Garvee Rooftop Cargo Box, offering 13.5 cubic feet versus the more compact design of the competitor.
• Best for Fuel Efficiency & Highway Driving → YSGDSEL 46"L, thanks to its aerodynamic engineering that minimizes drag and improves mileage.
• Best for Quiet Cabin Experience → YSGDSEL 46"L, with a design specifically tuned to reduce wind noise and turbulence at speed.
• Best for Loading Convenience → Both offer dual-side opening, but the YSGDSEL includes gas struts for hands-free lid holding, while the Garvee relies on standard hinges.
• Best for Durability Against Elements → Both use high-grade ABS materials, but the YSGDSEL highlights an advanced alloy resistant to thermal expansion and stress cracking in extreme temperatures.
• Best for Long Items → YSGDSEL 46"L features a centered layout that accommodates long objects like poles and rods effectively within its 14-inch width.
• Best for Universal Fitment → Both claim universal compatibility with round, square, and aero bars, but the YSGDSEL emphasizes foam-lined clamps to protect existing rack finishes.
In my opinion, if I were preparing for a mountain driving trip where the route involves long stretches of highway and steep inclines, I would choose the YSGDSEL 46"L. While the Garvee offers more room, the aerodynamic benefits of the YSGDSEL cannot be overstated when you are pushing a vehicle to its limits on mountain passes; the reduced drag and noise make the journey far less exhausting. The gas-assisted lids and advanced locking mechanisms provide a level of convenience and security that feels more refined for regular use. However, if the mountain trip involves a week-long camping expedition where you must haul three sets of skis, a tent, and coolers all at once, the sheer capacity of the Garvee becomes the deciding factor. For most drivers balancing performance and utility, the YSGDSEL offers the smarter, more efficient package.
You must verify your vehicle's roof rail specifications and crossbar length before purchasing to ensure safe installation.
Yes, the YSGDSEL features a sealed perimeter gasket designed to keep moisture and dust ingress below 0.5% relative humidity differential, making it highly effective against rain and dust during travel.
The YSGDSEL is marketed with a tool-free install system using U-bolts and pre-configured brackets. The Garvee requires proper strap attachment and key usage, but specific tool requirements depend on your vehicle's existing rack hardware.
Based on the design specifications, the YSGDSEL is engineered to minimize wind resistance and turbulence, resulting in a quieter cabin environment compared to larger, less aerodynamic boxes like the Garvee.
