Dr. Garuda Fujii is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Shinshu University, Japan. He received his B.Eng. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (2007), and his M.Eng. (2009) and Dr.Eng. (2012) degrees in Mechanical Science and Engineering from Nagoya University. Before joining Shinshu University, he served as an Assistant Professor at Akita Prefectural University. He joined Shinshu University in 2013, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019, and has been a Professor since 2023.
His research interests include topology optimization, geometrical constraint handling, numerical analysis, optimization algorithms, and the optimal design of metamaterials and metastructures. His research has established computational design methodologies for multifunctional and multiphysical metastructures that control elastic, thermal, acoustic, and electromagnetic fields, enabling novel physical functionalities such as invisibility cloaking, location camouflaging, and stress manipulation.
Dr. Fujii has received several prestigious honors, including the 2024 Young Investigator Award from Japan Association of Computational Mechanics (JACM), the 2023 Young Scientists’ Award, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the 2021 Frontier Achievement Award, and the 2017 Achievement Encouragement Award from the Design and Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was listed among the Stanford/Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists in November 2025. He has also been awarded competitive research grants, including a JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), a JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), etc.
