Presented at an undergraduate research conference at Thompson Rivers University
Directed Studies Poster ggrubisa final.pdfThis is the research poster was apart of my chemistry directed studies (CHEM 4480) research project supervised by Dr. Bruno Cinel titled "Investigation into the molecules present in leachate of soils affected by wildfire and fire retardant using 13C NMR spectroscopy". I presented at the Science Undergraduate Poster Exhibition of Research (SUPER) at the end of the Winter 2024 semester.
Although there has been some research into the impacts of wildfire on water quality, there remains a need for further research. To our knowledge, this was the first investigation into the impact of fire retardant on organic molecules present in soils. To ensure the sustainability of drinking water in the future we should be certain that the chemicals we use to fight fires will not have detrimental impact on our water resources in the future. This project was a preliminary investigation and proof of concept for hopefully more research in the future.
