Boy oh boy, there's a lot to unpack.
I've been making little animations for over a year, and I've recently been messing around with other tools to create things like videos or full-on renders!
The way the page is organised is by sections. In the first section, I talk about my workflow. The second section of the page is structured is that each animation shown belongs to a character I made, and they're all sorted by date of creation. The third section includes some basic samples for things like fur, leaves, rocks, etc. Effectively a simple "style guide".
⚠️This page contains a lot of images, so it may take a while to load them all, especially if you're on your phone or using a slow computer or connection!⚠️
Please, take a break every few characters, give your brain time to "chew" things, or else you might get overwhelmed or confused.
So, how do I make the little guys? Firstly, I get ideas both from other people and from the things I see. I look for either full-on concepts or features that could be expanded on. The things I see online that end up becoming the inspiration I draw from are a mixture of random animations, drawings, to some other videos. Consider, for instance, this random creature that appeared in a Kurzgesagt video (The link starts at the timestamp where a lot of them appear).
The Kurzgesagt alien admiring his alien flower
So then, I get to work, attempting to capture the essence of it by, for instance, mimicking the body shape, which, in this case, is a segmented tube. After modelling, I have something that looks roughly the way I want it to look. I make the model in what's called a Bind pose, which, for most 3D or 2D characters, is either a T-pose, where the arms are placed perpendicular to the torso, or an A-pose, where, like the T-pose, the character's arms are spread out, but rather than perpendicular, they're at an angle.
Here, you can see the difference, each with its pros and cons.
Pros:
Easy to make
Better for "rubberhose" limbs (for instance, Mario's arms)
Became a meme in 2016
Cons:
The armpit loses volume if the character's arms are lowered.
Unnatural
Pros:
More natural
Better for realistic limbs
Armpit volume remains roughly the same for lowering the arms
Cons:
The armpit loses volume if the character's arms are raised.
Harder to adapt to unrealistic proportions.
A bind pose can be something else entirely, such as quadrupeds, characters with more than two arms or legs, characters with tails, really, it's up to you.
I use a T-pose, because these differences only apply to characters made with rigs that deform the model, which I don't because the software I use doesn't support bendy limbs, at the cost of making things like tails have gaps that I can't get rid of without restricting the angles the joint can make, if I can get rid of them at all.
It's also why I rarely make elbow or knee joints, because of the gaps caused by bending the arms that I cannot get rid of.
The gap made by bending the tail
But, after modelling, here's what I have!
"It looks bad, it looks nothing like the creature you took inspiration from!"
Well, that's because it doesn't have a texture yet.
For texturing, I use a very large colour palette that, if you're from the Fancade community, might recognise, since the colours I used to make it are the colours from the game.
To extend the palette, I did the equivalent of paint mixing, where I put a few pixels of one colour, a few pixels of another, and then did an average blur.
I don't shade anything, so first, I paint the entire element one colour, in this case, pink, then I add more details, like eyes, spots, undersides, etc.
After the texturing is repeated for all of the character's parts, I have this.
Now is the fun part, animating!
To animate, you can do one of 3 things:
I use a mixture of math and keyframes, since I can easily interpolate between different functions. For example, that squash and stretch was done by linearly interpolating a sine function from, or to, a constant function.
So, after spending a lot of time on the animation, making the squash and stretch look right, fine-tuning the leg movements, among other things, the final result is ready to be posted on the internet!
This is practically what I go through whilst making a creature, and I have over 400 of the things!
So then, without further ado, here's the full timeline, filled with the little characters :]
Note: Each character has a bit of lore to them, which is often several paragraphs long, so I had to reduce it drastically for design reasons.
Note, the sequel: Because I have over 400 of the things, I decided to only show a few of the little creatures per year.
---2025---
What is by far the best creature, objectively, that has ever existed in a Mario game.
"It looks like a Sham'n!"
Indeed! The Sham'n was based on it.
Note: To those who've seen this before, I decided to, not only expand on the Sham'n's lore, but to also give them a remodel, to better match Gared's looks.
This is a Sham'n
Sham'ns (pronounced Sha-ms, whole name Shaman) live on shores near any body of water, like lakes, ponds, or beaches.
Their name came from their discoverer, who, after seeing some odd shapes in the forest, believed there was a cult there, and, after investigating, there were only Sham'ns, which is where their name and collective noun comes from, a "cult of Sham'ns".
Sham'ns are also as smart as humans, having their own language, Wæish, and having conquered some bodies of water, and a whole archipelago, appropriately named the Sham'nlands. They're able to learn another language, however, and can learn harder subjects, like mathematics, physics, chemistry, ad infinitum. However, much like how humans still hold their useless tribalistic nature, so do Sham'ns, as they hug each other for comfort at night, to make sure each and every member is protected while they sleep.
They have extra squishy bodies and bendy bone structures, allowing them to squeeze inside gaps that seem impossible to fit in.
Sham'ns tend to eat fish, and often tree sap or fruits, and can adapt to any culture's diet.
They're friendly and tamable, making them good house pets, but you will need a pool or large body of water to allow their swimming activities to occur in. They'll also want their own space when they grow older, and will, even if you try to resist, hug you at night in the same bed you're sleeping in for the same reasons as mentioned before.
This is Zeus Nimbus, Caret's dad.
Zeus is a Meteorologist, and takes things very seriously.
If you thought your dad's sneezes were bad, you'd be in for a shock to see his, both figuratively and literally. Thanks to this, Caret has a lot of metallic decoration, to shock them instead of being shocked by them.
Zeus once visited Caret and opened up the box in the fridge that had the month-old egg sandwich, and, after suffering from hydrogen sulfide, wrote on the box, in Sharpie, "Do not open -Zeus, Caret's father". In their defence, "It's still good!", Caret said after taking a bite from it.
He's very fluffy, like a cloud, and turns grey & rains and/or thunders if angered or sad, like a cloud, and has a beard ~~, like a cloud~~.
Zeus is a great-grandfather. During Caret's kid's birthday, he took his grandchild on a hot air balloon trip, which he was amazed by.
He also has another kid, a mailman named Hermes.
Zeus also has an ex, whom he got rid of because Calliope, his current wife, was more attractive and nicer to him.
He knows full well his child is bi, and, when he first knew this, Zeus acted indifferent, and now they coexist happily.
This is Garand Fisch, Gared's dad.
Garand is a leader Sham'n, and, because of that, he's quite large.
He's used to walking on all fours to fit in small spaces, like a school hallway to go to the parent teacher conferences.
Because of his large size, Garand works as a large businessman, and tries to go slowly to work - knowing full well he'll make it there on time because of his large legs - so as to minimize the damage done to other people and buildings.
That scar on his eye was from one of Gared's former bullies, when confronted, they tried to defend themselves, but ended closer to a wall than they could've ever hoped for, with a lot more bones that they had before.
Garand Fisch is very social if you get to know them.
A creature based on mathematics! I like maths, and this idea was stuck in my head for quite a while, so I'd (or, if I already did, I've) expand(ed) on it.
I made this website to serve as a sort of "archive" of the little dudes that people can look at.
[You're already looking at it!]
This is Zenith
Zenith is an astronomer, and a passionate one at that.
He is very sensitive to light, having to squint if outside, and, if directly exposed, feeling like he's burning. Hence, he rarely goes outside during the day, and if he does, he goes out with a large sun hat, with his tail all coiled around his body, so as not to be burnt.
Aside from that, he's a very fluffy fella, and he glows in the dark, especially the eyes, antennae, the "stars" inside and on his fur, and the end of his tail.
Outside of his work, Zenith is very calm and collected, often spending his time reading, or doing random artistic projects related to space, like making a painting of the Sun using his telescope to project the sun's light onto the canvas, which he used to paint the star's features, like sun spots, just like how Hisako Koyama did.
This was also a bit of a hate letter to astrology, because I don't like how people treat astronomy, the field of science that got me so interested in learning.
This is Teal, Caret's wife
Teal is, like Caret, very goopy, but rather than just dark blue ink, she's mostly paint and colored ink.
She draws and paints for a living, doing commissions and stuff.
Teal is a kind person and can give constructive feedback if asked to, but can also be brutally honest with someone.
She is, like her partner, fluffy in both senses of the word. Unlike Caret, however, she doesn't try to stay clean, because, well, painting is a messy task.
She lives with Caret and is happily married to them. Often, Caret asks if they can borrow some ink or a pen, since theirs ran out.
This is Caret
Caret writes for a living, and they're the kind of pedantic person to correct you on your grammar and spelling.
They're a very shiny person, everything that's yellow that you see there is golden and shiny, not to look cool, but because they were born that way, their golden claws work like little fountain pens.
They're very fluffy, in both senses of the word. Caret keep their fur as clean as they can, but due to the nature of their tail, it's hard to keep it clean.
Caret has a cat called Schrödinger, and their home is filled with metaphorical objects, like the month-old MacGuffin in the fridge that they refuse to throw out because "It's still good! It's my comfort food.", or the box the MacGuffin is in, which is written on, with sharpie, "Do not open -Zeus, Caret's father", or the functional shotgun they keep hidden away with belonged to their grandfather named Chekhov, they didn't need to use it thus far, but the possibility remains!
For this creature, I've figured out how to do fur!
B. Fish and K. Fish are siblings, and since B. Fish doesn't have lungs, he has to walk around with a helmet full of water for them to breathe freely.
Whilst K. Fish refuses to admit it, she's slower than her brother at swimming.
I also dared to make more female characters, since, up until then, I didn't know how to make girls, and then I just made them look like boys and called it a day.
This is DD
DD is Gobbl's brother, and often likes to dig with him
His home is on an active volcano, and, on occasion, he likes to chill there.
DD is, like Gobbl, a friend of Pahoehoe, though he'd wish he'd relax for a bit in the lava pools instead of talking about their composition.
This is Dan
Dan is made of Dango
He had a chunk of his head bitten off, and, according to the person who ate him, he tasted like strawberry, which was all that we could gather since Dan was screaming his lungs out.
Dan has got some minor trust issues (I wonder why).
I also tried to make mild body horror, which looked decent.
This is Gobbl, the dragon
Gobbl was a weird kid; he liked to dig, a lot, so much so that he cut himself on sharp rocks by accident quite a few times.
He's still an odd fella, still likes to shove his face into leaves, dirt, sand, or pebbles, all just to dig.
Gobbl is a friend of Pahoehoe, but often wishes he'd stop rambling on about geology.
This is a Leader Sham'n (yes, I make species too)
In the cult (yes, that's the collective noun), the Leader is the one who's at the top of the hierarchy, followed by their first few mates, then their cubs, then the grown-up cubs and their mates and kids. Each consecutive level receives less food than the one before, although the differences shrink with each level (Ex, The Leader gets 16 fish, then their mates & kids get 8 each, then their mates and kids get 4 each, and so on).
One of the most recognisable features is the large size, being roughly 8m from head to tail. Some other differences include the barbels, which, to accommodate a larger head, use the body's movements to push blood. Another feature is the pheromones released to indicate their royalty.
Leaders also have a deeper voice, since with a deeper voice, they can be heard from further away.
This is Reggie C., or Reggie Chonk
Reggie has a lisp, so his "th"s are longer than normal. So he pronounces words like "think" as "thhhink".
Reggie doesn't like nicknames, and he becomes annoyed if he's called one, like "Reg", so please, when he's within earshot, refer to him as "Monsieur Reggie Chonk", he feels liked that way.
He's a bit pompous and egotistical, and cares a lot about how others see & refer to him. He's also French and is fluent in French.
Despite all the flaws, he's friends with Dusty and Frosty and does, on occasion, go out together on little walks.
Dusty and Frosty are brothers who live in totally different climates. Whilst Dusty lives in an arid & hot area, Frosty lives in a colder one.
They're both very friendly, and Dusty, as the looks might suggest, knows a lot about food & cooking.
For Dusty, I've decided to take a crack at making a movable mouth.
This is Floot, he's a dragon that likes to fly freely about.
Floot was also my first character to have functional wings!
They're both dragons & brothers, but due to a large mass-to-wing area ratio, they can't fly.
Given that Pahoehoe can spit out fire & taste, and digest lava and rocks, it would make sense that he is a geologist.
Keal, on the other hand, can spit water and works as a Lifeguard at a water park.
---2024---
Gared is the little character I use to represent myself. Though, yes, I hear you, although Gared isn't a human, I'm not a furry. For the simple reason that Gared has no fur.
However, as my work shows, I can make fur.
This is Boomer, and he's quite the bomb (🥁)
Boomer has anger issues and can explode if irritated.
Whilst making Boomer, I was experimenting with particles and how to animate with them. I ended up using particles for things like explosions, but nowadays, I use PixelComposer.
I've made a few isopods, and, instead of showing them one by one, I'll just show them all at once!
For all of the isopods, I've been experimenting with a small delay in the rotations and squishing, to make the movements more natural.
Yet another species.
This one lives near beaches and coastlines, eating fish.
This one was more to experiment with multiple tentacle-like limbs, and I think it turned out well.
This was my first attempt at a walk cycle, and it all went up from there.
This was my first attempt at an animation with maths keyframes, as well as some basic shading.
---2023---
Some people say this looks weird, but it looks fine to me.
This was less of an actual artwork, and more of an experiment on shading.
And now for the first few things I made, all before math animations, all before even figuring out how to make a leg move naturaly.
