The hedgehogs of Britain need you!

Introduction

In Britain, hedgehogs are now classified as vulnerable following significant declines in recent years. While many factors are likely to have contributed to these declines, one remains poorly studied.

Hedgehogs, along with other wildlife, are threatened by the use of rodenticides- toxins used to kill rats and mice. Studies of hedgehogs found dead across Europe have shown exposure to a range of rodenticides and other chemicals, with some individuals containing the residues of multiple compounds. This suggests that current rodent control practices could affect a large number of hedgehogs. 

Despite these concerns, little is known about how and where hedgehogs are exposed to rodenticides.

How you can help

Because rodenticides are commonly used to control rats and mice around homes, gardens are important places for understanding how hedgehogs may be exposed to these chemicals. 

In this project, we want members of the public to help us collect the data we need. These projects pose no risk to hedgehogs or other wildlife, but will help us understand the relative importance of the different ways hedgehogs ingest rodenticides. 

Everyone with a camera or who lives nearby Reading can take part — no experience needed, just curiosity and an interest in local wildlife.
