Zulkifflee Haji Hassan, the founder of Garang Racing team, first started racing in1978, driving a Datsun 160J at the old Batu Tiga racing track. He continued to race and made his mark through the 1980s and 1990s. He enjoyed racing until the early years of the 2000s, driving a Mazda RE, Alfa Sud, Alfetta, Ford1.6, Toyota Levin, Celica, Ford Sierra Cosworth, Nissan Bluebird turbo, and a 3.5 MG.
Garang Racing was formally registered in 1985, actively participating in all races at the old Penang street circuit and Shah Alam circuit, Johore circuits and now moving on to Sepang International circuit. We are the oldest and the most active racing team in the country.
Although small in size, we are there at the race tracks, entering almost all races for the past 44 years. Formally a Bank Manager by profession, he chose to quit the banking job after having secured a major sponsorship from Malaysia Airlines in 1985.
That was the starting point towards pursuing serious racing and paving ways for opportunities to race in England, Macao, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Racing in the 70's, 80's and 90's was so much different from today. Winning in the old days was largely due to driver skills. Today it is hugely dependent on the superiority of machine technology. Of course, if you have the combination of both these qualities then you have the right formula to win races. But there is also another inevitable factor: the huge money aspect that you have to invest in!
Motor racing is known to be the most expensive of all sports. There is the machine to spend on, the parts, the maintenance, tyres, oils, good mechanics, marketing, and media machinery for publicity. This leads to the need to hunt for sponsors, i.e sponsors who would be interested in the promotion of motorsports and appreciate the significance of advertising during those events.
...and many more!
