Gara N. Dexter
I am a PhD candidate in the Mohn lab at the University of British Columbia specializing in the field of microbial catabolism. Before graduate school, I was a Post-Bachelor Research Associate in the Guss lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where I developed genetic tools for engineering Pseudomonas putida KT2440. I obtained my Bachelors of Science in Biology from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN.
My research focuses on understanding the enzymatic pathways and mechanisms that bacteria utilize to break down complex organic compounds, such as aromatic compounds derived from lignin.
The aim of my work is to uncover biochemical processes that can be leveraged for biotechnological applications, including the development of sustainable biomaterials.
My interests are microbial catabolism, biocatalysis, sustainable biomaterials, environmental biotechnology.
