Tips for Getting Started
Start with Win and Place
If you're new to racing, Win and Place bets are the right place to start. They're simple to understand, and they force you to do the fundamental work of finding horses you believe in. Place bets are particularly forgiving while you're learning to read form — a horse can run second or third and you still collect.
Understand the pools before you bet exotic
Exotic bets like Trifectas and First 4s look appealing because of the big dividends. But big dividends are only valuable if they occur often enough to be profitable over time. Before committing to exotics, spend time reading form guides, understanding weight, barriers, track conditions, and jockey bookings.
Use part-units to manage outlay
Most TAB platforms in Australia allow bets from as little as $0.10 per unit on combination exotics. There's no shame in running a $0.10 per unit First 4 box — it means you can cover more combinations for a sensible dollar amount. The dividend you receive is simply proportional to your unit size.
Compare fixed odds to the tote
For Win bets, it's always worth comparing the fixed odds at corporate bookmakers against the current TAB tote approximation. For in-form favourites, tote dividends can sometimes beat fixed odds when late money doesn't arrive. For roughies, fixed odds often lock in better value before money flows in on the market favourite.
Read the form guide
Australian racing form guides include a horse's last six starts, its finishing position, the distance, track condition (Good, Soft, Heavy), the margin of defeat, trainer and jockey, and its weight carried. Learning to read form is the single biggest skill upgrade a punter can make — far more valuable than chasing any particular bet type.
