The Food Bank Hunger Games is an entertaining, team-building challenge where corporate teams get one box of mystery ingredients and 45 minutes to whip up a dish for a panel of judges in a LIVE cooking competition.

I remember, when I was younger, the first thing I would do upon waking up on a Saturday morning was cut on one of two things: Food Network or my Gamecube. I loved cooking. I loved video games. There was no in-between.

As time went on, I began to watch Food Network less and play video games more. Did it mean that I no longer enjoyed cooking? No. I just struggled to find a happy medium between the two. Cooking and video games, at the time, seemingly had no relationship to each other. But how wrong was I?

Like I said before, I still watch Food Network from time to time, but even it has been forced to change in order to keep up with our current times. Gone are the days of constant blocks of cooking shows, and instead, Food Network fills up its programming blocks with cooking competitions and Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives (no one can say no to Triple D!).

Initially, when I worked on the textures of the food models, I did not realize how realistic some of these ended up looking. In my mind, while creating them, I thought they would have a rather cartoony look due to the simplicity of the models and the bright color palettes. However, spending an extensive time of studying real-life references (which ended up in me actually cooking these things for my own dinner most of the time) I started to go into more detail and render each part out more by looking at the smallest details of each reference.

We're excited to continue the series with a reflection written and submitted by Ashley, a high school student based in Philadelphia, PA, on the ways cooking games have helped her destress and connect with herself in crucial moments.

More than once on TikTok in the run up to Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I have seen a video that seems to have been born from a simple wish: that cooking in real life was as much fun as cooking in Breath of the Wild is.

I always watch these videos a couple of times, revelling in the pure joy of it. And that's the thing: cooking in Breath of the Wild really is distilled joy. The animation lasts for maybe a few seconds, but it's often my favourite part of the game.

Sometimes it feels like, if you're not interested in taking on Ganon or whoever it is, Breath of the Wild is just itching to be whatever game you want it to be. It can be all about climbing mountains. All about Moblin combat. Or, it can be all about cooking. And, really, I'm starting to think it might be one of the best cooking games ever.

For something so streamlined, its cooking feels remarkable real for starters. I'm not saying I regularly dump ingredients in a pan and they jump around and then turn into the dish I'm after. But Breath of the Wild gets at some of the deeper truths of cooking. The mystery of it, for one thing.

And then I realised I had to think for myself a bit. I had to choose the ingredients in a menu, put them in my hands, and then return to the game itself. Suddenly I had the prompt to cook - because Link was holding the stuff to cook with! In other words, I had to experiment and fumble my way through it. You know, like cooking.

So give me something like a Niki Segnit cook book, which teaches you to approach cooking as an experiment. In The Flavour Thesaurus, she points you towards harmonious pairings. In Lateral Cooking, she takes, say, a biscuit apart and gives you the biscuit continuum - change this variable and this happens, change that variable and you get something else.

Experimental cooking! This is what I love in the real kitchen, and I do believe it's the best way to approach cooking in Zelda. Particularly if you're not interested in defeating Ganon or any of that stuff. If you're after Ganon, get a few great recipes for food that restores health or boosts this or that and you're off. But it feels like such a waste! Instead, I love to ignore all that, look at whatever's in the inventory, chuck it in and see if what turns up at the end is disgusting or not.

In other words, Breath of the Wild understands that cooking is an adventure - probably because it comes from a developer mindset in which everything should be an adventure. This is why it brings to mind Niki Segnit's books more than any others - because those books are about self-expression and experimentation and cooking as if you're heading off into the woods and who knows what will happen?

Also: deep down cooking is magic. One of my favourite experiences with cooking was making syrup. Sugar, water, heat. And then you have to wait. You have to wait for the sugar and the water to slowly turn golden. And the tension comes from the fact that if you stir it - and you'll really want to - if you stir it, you'll ruin it.

Pizzeria is a simple simulation game where you look at the thought bubbles of customers to see what they want and how much time you have left to serve them. Prepare their drinks, grab the pizza crust, add toppings, cook the pizza & serve it to them as they request without a box or boxed for to go orders. As you progress through all 20 stages of the game you unlock additional toppings and drink variations. Some toppings are added before the pizza is cooked while others are added after. You don't have to worry about timing the pizza cooking as the oven is automatic, though you have to set the pizza in and take it out.

Burger Fast Chef is a cheeseburger cooking game. Look at the customer orders rolling in from the top right, then craft a burger in the lower right. When the burger has been cooked and assembled place it on the bag to deliver it to the customer.

Cooking Blaze is a 50-stage cooking simulation game where players run a lunch cart serving cheeseburgers, fries, drinks, and other sides. You can earn up to a 3-star rating on each stage by making customers happy & quickly serving them exactly what they order. Fries and burgers can be pre-cooked to help you save time. Customers have a patience meter which shows how long they are willing to wait for food. As you progress through the game you can use your earnings to purchase additional cooking spaces, extra food storage slots, and premium ingredients customers pay more for. Tap on each item and the game will automatically serve it to a customer desiring it.

Cooking Street is a food serving game where players have to serve food and drinks to customers. Each customer must be served precisely what they ordered and the food must not be overcooked or undercooked. As you progress through the game you unlock higher quality ingredients and additional kitchen equipment. The game features 50 levels of increasing difficulty. You can earn up to 3 stars on each level by purchasing upgrades and quickly serving customers. Each day has a number of customers which must be served and an earnings goal. Nickelodeon Cooking Contest is a food preparation compelation game consisting of 10 different mini-games. This game invites you to make Holland Oats, a Krabby Patty, Sushi Dushi, a Kelp Shake, donuts, avacado toast, sponge cake, Love Muffins, Hudson's Juice Blend, and steak & potatoes. I want to make this for my family, but there are some recovering alcoholics in the bunch. I know that actual alcohol is burned off during the cooking, but at least one is wary of even a hint of it (we had to get rid of spaghetti sauce because it was made with vodka). Is there a way to make this without the beer? Will it significantly change the stew if I leave it out?

I too have been avoiding Hunger Games. After reading this, I guess I better download it. Really only had a vague idea what it was about and thought it was for teens.

Lovely post, telling the story and cooking the stew. My mother often made lamb stew when I was a child and served it with dumplings as I recall. (Be lovely with your biscuits.) The flavors sound wonderful!

Just like on televised American cooking competitions, the teams were each given a box of special ingredients to use. On this day it was zinc-fortified rice, mung beans and mola carplet, a local fish. They had mini-kitchens with burners and pans and sharp knives and access to a fully stocked pantry. They raced around to whip up the tastiest meals they could as the clock ran down.

Make a cooking show episode with guest stars, like siblings and adult role models! Encourage social skill development by giving your junior chef someone to talk to and guide through their process while on camera. 0852c4b9a8
