Team Bruja Bros is composed of six veteran Gameheads students who are passionate about games, the design process, and the opportunity to tell their stories. Gameheads itself is a tech training program that provides holistic support for low-income youth and youth of color (such as those on our team).
As an entirely POC team, we drew upon our own experiences to inform the narrative themes, but most central to the authenticity of the story was the work of our artist and narrative designer, Marisa. Marisa, of Afro-Cuban heritage, regularly consulted with her father for elements of the story and accurate representation of the Orishas.
The overall team is made up of our artist and narrative designer Marisa (Lesbian, Afro-Cuban & Tejana), artist Camila (Queer, Latine-American, specifically Mexican/Chicanx), programmers Rebecca (Queer, Biracial & Black) and Phuong (Queer, Vietnamese-American), sound designer Zora (Black and Diné/Navajo), and our project manager and game designer Bae (Queer, Transmasculine, Korean-American). As such, our values are reflected in Camino, which to us is something of a cathartic revised history: within this world, the powerless can be divinely powerful by calling upon their heritage, and they can fight back against injustices ordinarily too large for one person to bear.
Other past games made by our team members also reflect our values, such as Te Amo Mama, a game meant to address the lack of representation of mothers in games, Don’t Walk Alone, a game about clapping back against cat-callers, and Uprooted, a game about heritage loss and the sacrifices inherent to assimilation. We hope to continue to tell the stories important to us in the future.
