My Goal: My goal with this game to create a platformer with fun, fluid movement that feels satisfying for the player to execute. These movement mechanics will be paired with finely tuned levels with collectables hidden throughout while also featuring a linear, finely tuned path to the end, which when contrasted with the collectables and paired with a speed-run timer offers multiple ways to play a level, and a reason to go back and repeat levels. My biggest inspiration for the level design is the Mario franchise, specifically the more linear 3D games (Galaxy, 3D world & Land) and speed-run routes of certain stars in Mario 64. For the movement style I was heavily inspired by the Bunny character from the flash game Run 3 of all things, it may not be held in the same light as many other games as it's a flash game but this character very much has the fun, fluid and satisfying movement that I previously discussed and Run 3 is a pretty solid game despite its limitations as a Flash game. More specifically the bunny character makes you feel like a speed runner, it makes you feel good at the game while remaining intuitive and easy to pick up and learn. This doesn't mean I want to make the movement super simple though, my goal is easy to pick up and learn but still with a high skill ceiling; the average player who's trying should feel good at the game until they go online and see what crazy stuff other people are doing. I was also inspired by more precision timed movements in games, specifically bunny hopping in Counter Strike, rocket jumping in Team Fortress & Quake and speed runner techniques in Mario games like 64 and Odyssey. Visually I want to keep it pretty simple and easy to read. I'm going for a cell shaded style with not too thick black outlines above I have Windwaker, XIII and Jet Set Radio but this style is in a lot of other games.
Character: You play this game as a stylized skull on a spring. On account of his body being a spring, he is always jumping. He has a simple but fairly unique silhouette. His head is a bit bare especially from the back, I plan to make a variety of hat collectables as they can give a lot of character given his otherwise minimal design and cosmetic rewards are always a rewarding unlock. He is designed after this little stylized skull guy I like to draw, kind of like a logo.
Camera: This game features a 3rd person camera with free camera rotation.
Controls: No need to press a jump button, he's always jumping!
