We have two series for the summer that you can partake in: Improv with Britt Block and Acting with Tonya Nichols. Sign up to develop your skills and friendships with other local artists. These classes are fun to take on your own or with a partner as an active date or bestie bonding oportunity. The acting classes with Tonya can also be taken as a parent and child combo to have an opportunity to share new sides of yourself with each other as you grow.
Britt spent more than 30 years as a theater teacher, introducing countless students to improv in various forms. In addition to directing plays and working in depth on Shakespeare, Britt trained as an improvisor and as an improv teacher.
She has directed Theatresports, Maestro, Harold, and Lifegame formats. She was trained to direct improv by Keith Johnstone at the Loose Moose Theater in Calgary, and has performed with BATS (Bay Area Theatre Sports).
Britt first encountered improv at the Green Gulch Zen Center in 1989 where Keith was teaching improv as a way of practicing being in the moment. Keith's book, IMPRO, a classic in the field, was hugely influential for her. She studied with Keith on and off for about 6 years.
Here in McMinnville, Britt has directed plays at Gallery Theater, and she is also an exhibiting visual artist -participating for the third year in the Art Harvest Studio Tour the first two weekends in October.
Come by and say, 'Hi!' or see her work online.
A strong foundation in improvisation is key to performance training. Improvisation skills free the actor to invent and invest at new levels.
In this class we will cover all the basics of improvisation, learning how to be on stage in the moment without a script, with confidence and good humor.
Using warm ups, games, imagination, and teamwork we will learn improv skills and principles that can carry over into every situation on stage and in life!
Be prepared to have fun, be foolish and vulnerable, laugh a lot, and take the "risks" involved in flying without a net.
We will create theater out of nothing but our own experience. By the end of our 4 week session we will be ready to have a short showcase performance!
You don't need to be extroverted. You don't need to be imaginative. You don't need to already know how to improvise. You just need to bring yourself. You are already more of an expert than you know.
Tuesdays at 6:00

Working professionally in theater for the past 30 years since getting her masters in directing, Tonya most enjoys teaching actors to improve their skill set to aid in all future productions.
At Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, Nichols directed the Professional Repertory Education and Performance Program and was the Performance Coordinator for the summer stock rotation. She also taught adult and student acting classes while serving on their board.
Additionally, Nichols was a board member and director for Eastern Skye Productions where she worked in both film and theater projects. She has directed shows and worked as a dramaturg for The Independent Shakespeare Company, Sacred Fools Theater Company, Geffen Playhouse and Pasadena Playhouse. She was an adjunct professor and teacher for Pierce Community College and various high school programs and productions.
When moving from LA to McMinnville four years ago, Nichols resigned from the Actors Equity Association so that she can work on non union theater productions at Gallery and get to know the members of her community. The Curious Savage marks her first occasion to direct a show at Gallery, and she is hopeful that the success of that show will afford her the opportunity to submit further proposed plays and musicals to direct.
When not at Gallery, Nichols can be found with her adult red coated golden retrievers and their puppies that she breeds for specialized working positions in service and sport.
