Our team was able to design a new manual with Universal Expectations for staff and students at school. We plan to introduce and implement the new manual for the 2022-2023 school year. We still would like to add more student demonstration videos. This portion of the project can be continued next school year.
How successful was your action plan at addressing the challenge?
Our action plan did address the challenge. With time we will tweak the manual to meet our needs at school. We used Microsoft Sway to create the new virtual manual. This program allows program administrators the ability to edit. That feature is an excellent resource at our disposable. As needs arise or programs change this project can be modified.
Which stakeholders and association practice or program were impacted?
The project will impact all school staff and students, once implemented.
How do you know (site evidence)?
Our administration and school counsellor will share this manual at the first staff meeting of the 2022-2023 school year. Email communication and the final Sway are evidence. We also surveyed the staff, using Forms, for input allowing all personnel the opportunity to voice their ideas and concerns about Universal Expectations.
How were your four chosen competencies used in the implementation of your project?
Foundational Competency Collaborate Purposefully- Gathering a group of diverse colleagues, in an effort to create our project required us all to complete a project with a shared goal.
Leadership Pathway Collaborative Relationships- We used the needs assessment to determine that a new set of universal expectations was warranted within our school. We sent out surveys to reach all of our diverse stakeholders, allowing as many as possible to provide input. As a team we them discussed and decided how we wanted to move forward.
Overarching Competency #1 Interpersonal Effectiveness- I had the task of bringing to light the shared need, based on the assessment, to discuss an identified project. Next, I used that to create a team that could bring together a shared vision for our project.
Overarching Competency #2 Continued Learning and Education- Many colleagues were able to naturally step into the leadership role throughout this process. When looking through my email evidence, you can see where team members were able to be leaders by sharing ideas, plans, and documents for all staff to use. They determined future plans and deadlines. Once I set the stage, I was really able to step back and let the project take its own shape. We had a very capable and intelligent team that dove right into this process.
What obstacles, if any, did you encounter?
Originally, we planned to use Microsoft PowerPoint, this was hard for multiple contributors to add to. We also struggled with adding videos of students demonstrating expectations and links to other resources.
How did you address them?
We discussed the technology issues we had and what possible solutions we would be able to utilize. We thought about using Google Slides or another platform, but since our school district uses Microsoft Teams, we decided to use Sway. We are familiar with it for our Weekly School Newsletters. It is easy to share to staff, students, and even parents if we chose to. We can determine who is able to make changes to the document, this helps with any future changes needed to be made.
Given the outcomes, describe any changes you might make to the Capstone Project’s action plan.
One change I know we will be addressing at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year is adding more demonstrative videos. We also need to add reflection from staff once they have been given the opportunity to use the new Manual.
