When the original plans for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge were unveiled during that faithful D23 Parks Panel, one of the things that caught the eye of fans the world over was the idea that going to Batuu wasn't just going to be a passive experience but an adventure in its own right in which your own actions would affect everything from cast member interactions to details of the ride experience. The land promised to be a thriving ecosystem of aliens, droids, and bounty hunters. Some wise old-timers have rightfully pointed out that it is very much a hive of scum and villainy.
With this second stab at Galaxy's Edge, we at Team Legend very much hope to bring back that spark of hope from the initial land presentation and run with the pitched RPG elements as much as we possibly can. This will mostly be accomplished through an elaborate app that tracks your reputation progress, "credits", GPS location, nearby Augmented Reality elements to interact with, and so much more. "Star Wars: Legends of the Force" promises to be the most immersive live action role playing experience ever attempted at any theme park.
The game will work using a combination of tasked assigned to you in the app, tracking your progress through the app, interacting with various ARG elements (think a more elaborate and realistic Pokemon Go! type of gameplay experience), and most importantly interacting with real world cast members sprinkled across the land playing a whole host of heroes, villains, and everything in between. Essentially these cast members will act as NPCs (non-playable characters) and will be a key ingredient towards making the land feel like a living, breathing Star Wars location. While merchants and service workers can still feel free to play create their own backstories and play into the story of the land, these "NPCs" are hired specifically for "on-stage" role play performance.
The biggest element of the app that you'll be consistently using is tracking the three pieces of information in relation to your character's progress...Credits, Karma, and Light Side/Dark Side. Credits simply allow you to "purchase" in-game items through the app that might help you along the way, or can be used to hire NPCs to help you on your mission. Karma will come from how you interact with NPCs as well as merchants and service workers, plus how well you perform in the interactive attractions within the area. An overall baseline "reputation" if you will. Finally light side/dark side is pretty self explanatory and tracks how deep you are one way or another with the two opposing sides of the force.
The other element of the app that's very essential is using the GPS functionality to interact with others engaging in the game within the land. Ex this will allow you to track other "Bounty Hunters" playing the Bounty Hunted game and potentially create alliances. The GPS will also be used by the NPC characters to track your progress and see what role they'll be fulfilling in your story as you approach them. NPC cast member apps are armed with a database show every guest player's stats as well as which "mission"/game they're currently playing.
Finally, the in-app camera will include interactions from augmented reality elements within the land to give a more cinematic experience than what might be possible from a practical point of view. Ex: this may be used in a scenario where you're fleeing a fire fight to simulate the damage being taken by surrounding buildings within the ensuing action. All this mixed with a core land design and layout that's catered to the RPG components and giving players and NPCs ample room to wander and interact with promise to make this Galaxy's Edge an experience that pushes theme park interactivity beyond the stratosphere.
In "Bounty Hunted", you could become the hunter OR the Hunted based on your current reputation and karma. If you're in good with the local population you'll be tasked with tracking down those that have ventured into negative karma and shown traits of the dark side. If you lean more towards the dark side, it is your job to evade capture. Go one hour within the borders of the land without being discovered by another player and reap the credits that come with it.
The kinetic energy of roaming droids is fully unleashed in "Droid Decoys". Within this game you'll be assigned to either track down a rebel droid that's holding a vital piece of information about the resistance and their fight for freedom or have a keen eye on which droids hanging out at rebel alliance hot spots have ulterior motives and are actually spies for the empire. Droid Decoys will have you looking over your shoulder at even some of the most adorable Star Wars creatures.
In "Imposter Syndrome", the focus shifts entirely to the NPCs and merchants. There are spies on both sides who appear to be on the side of who they're surrounded by at first, but are actually just where they are to collect data. Essentially this is the live actor version of Droid Decoys and requires an extra layer of social cunning and correct body language reading to correctly call out the potential rebel spies or traitors to the empire.
One of two games located within the elaborate cavern system set up specifically as a stage for the LARP elements, "Relic Raiders" is the ultimate Star Wars scavenger hunt. You are tasked with retrieving a series of important relics, some of which may contain special powers to turn the tide of the war. Depending on your in-game stats, you may be assigned to steal the relics for the good of the Empire or ensure that they belong...in a museum and out of the Empire's hands.
The most elaborate of the five games, Fight for the Force is a 15 minute walk through experience taking place in a series of hidden caverns deep within the land's centerpiece Jedi temple. Ancient powers are said to reside deep within the bowels of the temple, and it is your job to go in to try and retrieve said power. Rather that power is used for good or evil is entirely dependent on the stats of the team which ends up scanning the most force energy within the labyrinth (using the ARG camera). Each round a dozen light side and dark side leaning players will be let into the maze filled with traps and hazards. It is up to you to wield the power of the force for the side that your actions have led you to. It's the grand finale to your own personal Star Wars adventure.
