Exploring Galaxies with MaNGA

Aim: To provide exposure to the general public on astronomy and introduce the basics in Marvin to visualize and analyze MaNGA's galaxy data. Participants will be able to extract galaxy data from MaNGA, search galaxies based on their properties, and perform simple analyses based on these properties. Participants will also be exposed to several applications of MaNGA in research.

Introduction to MaNGA
Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is a galaxy integral-field spectroscopic survey within the fourth generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV), and it maps the composition and kinematics of gas and stars in 10,000 nearby galaxies using fiber bundles at the Apache Point Observatory, New Mexico. Think of it as a gallery of 'pictures' of many galaxies (over 10,000!) taken using a telescope!

Marvin is a tool specifically designed to visualize and analyze MaNGA data in Python. Users can access MaNGA datacubes (both locally and remotely) and perform powerful queries based on the parameters, without any hassle compared to usual databases.
