Director of Photography's (DP's) Partner: The Gaffer's main role is to execute the creative vision of the Director of Photography (Cinematographer). The DP specifies the desired mood, tone, and quality of light for a scene, and the Gaffer determines the technical plan to achieve it.
Lighting Design: They design the entire lighting plot: deciding which fixtures to use, where to position them, how much power is needed, and how to shape the light (making it soft or hard, focused or diffused).

2. Technical Expertise and Gear Management

Electrical Authority: The Gaffer is a skilled electrician. They are responsible for calculating the electrical load, ensuring the power supply (from the location or a generator) is adequate, and managing the safe power distribution across the entire set.
