1. Translating Vision into Light (Creative Execution)

• Director of Photography's (DP's) Partner: The Gaffer's main role is to execute the creative vision of the Director of Photography (Cinematographer). The DP specifies the desired mood, tone, and quality of light for a scene, and the Gaffer determines the technical plan to achieve it.

• Lighting Design: They design the entire lighting plot: deciding which fixtures to use, where to position them, how much power is needed, and how to shape the light (making it soft or hard, focused or diffused).

2. Technical Expertise and Gear Management

• Electrical Authority: The Gaffer is a skilled electrician. They are responsible for calculating the electrical load, ensuring the power supply (from the location or a generator) is adequate, and managing the safe power distribution across the entire set.

• Equipment Selection: They are experts on lighting fixtures and modifiers. They choose the most appropriate light source (LED, HMI, Tungsten, etc.) for each specific shot and manage the entire inventory of lighting equipment.

3. Ensuring Safety on Set

• Secure Rigging: The Gaffer is responsible for the safe rigging of large, heavy lights, especially when they are suspended high up or placed on cranes.

• Electrical Safety: They prevent electrical hazards by meticulously laying cables, managing power flows, and ensuring all electrical connections and safety protocols meet industry standards. This is crucial for protecting the entire cast and crew.

A Gaffer is not just someone who turns on lights; they are the highly skilled professional who bridges the gap between the artistic vision and the technical realities of lighting, ensuring the required look is captured safely and effectively.

The Light Behind the Scenes: Gaffer Binod Ghimire's Cinematic Journey

​Hello to all cinema lovers, colleagues, and well-wishers!

​Cinema is not just about actors and camera lenses; it is a wonderful magic of light and shadow. Lighting plays a crucial role in bringing every scene to life, carrying the depth of the story to the audience's heart, and accurately presenting every emotion seen on the screen. Working in the Nepali film industry for over 18 years as a film production lighting technician—a Gaffer (Chief Lighting Technician)—I have experienced this magic up close.

​Working alongside my 'Gaffer Crew', from technical set management to flawlessly translating the director's and cinematographer's vision onto the screen, has always been a matter of immense pride for me. Today, I am going to share this cinematic journey and some of my memories with you.

Throughout this long and unforgettable journey, I have had the opportunity to take on the main responsibility of lighting in many successful and popular Nepali films. Some of the special films in my portfolio include:

• ​Kohalpur Express: Working to make the visuals of this film, starring Keki Adhikari, Priyanka Karki, and Buddhi Tamang, attractive and colorful was a truly fun experience.

• ​Shatkon: In this film starring Karma Shakya and Bholaraj Sapkota, I had the opportunity to set the suspense and mood of the story through lighting design.

• ​Sushree Sampati: My gaffer team handled the responsibility of making the scenes bright and lively in this film featuring Salon Basnet.

• ​Nametine Ghau: I also had the opportunity to work as the gaffer on this special project.

• ​Parichay and Yetiko Khoji Ma: The skilled technical artistry and hard work of our 'Gaffer Crew' can also be clearly seen in these films.

​In addition to these, I have been continuously working on commercial advertisements for established brands like Livon and Vianet, as well as various music videos.
