I am a third-year Communication Design student at the University of Cincinnati's DAAP program. I am currently on my first co-op rotation at Live Well Collaborative.
I have had the blessing to be able to serve in multiple leadership positions while displaying my creativity and problem-solving skills throughout my nineteen years. I hope to delve deeper into learning about leadership and ways to make everyone feel welcome through the University Honors Program here at UC.
I am a Cincinnati native, located fifteen minutes South in Northern Kentucky. I have grown up with the Queen City’s influence and have loved being so close to such an amazing place.
In my free time I thoroughly enjoy film photography, hot yoga/ pilates, getting a cup of coffee from a local cafe (Roebling Books & Coffee is the best in the Tristate) and concerts! My favorite concert experience was over the summer of 2022, when I waited in a crowd for eight hours to see Tame Impala. It was the best live concert I have ever been to, and I regret nothing: except not wearing any sunscreen.
In what way(s) did you personally grow this year? How did you demonstrate or rebuild the resilience needed to move forward? How will you utilize resources and your support network to hold yourself accountable in continuing this growth?
This year was full of personal and professional growth. I started my first cooperative education search this past Fall, full of anxiety and self-doubt of whether my work was good enough. I was fully involved in my sorority, Theta Phi Alpha, which took up a big chunk of my time in addition to my on-campus job. I was worried my school would fall behind. After some reflection and creative strategy, I decided to take a step back from my sorority to focus on school. I used the resources within Theta Phi Alpha, our chapter president and chapter advisor. I went to them with my worries, and they reassured me that school comes first. I was officially on special status for the Fall semester, which entails less requirements and time spent. This decision panned out exactly as I thought, I was able to balance my social and academic lives with harmony. When portfolios first went out, I was lucky enough to have my first co-op secured within the first week. I was ecstatic! I continued my school semester excited for Spring and ready to begin my career in design.
I proceeded to spent my Spring semester at The Live Well Collaborative as a Design Research Intern. It was an amazing first 9 to 5 experience, full of beautiful relationships and knowledge. I am currently still working part-time there! I was granted countless resources through this co-op; I was on a team of fellow DAAP students that have all had four or more co-ops under their belts. I utilized their knowledge of the design field and cooperative education system to decipher what my decision would be for the next co-op semester: return to Live Well or search elsewhere. After long weeks of their guidance in addition to my own personal contemplation, I decided to not return to see what other forms of design experience I could get under my belt. In my gut, I knew I wanted to try something different but the welcoming work culture at Live Well made the decision difficult. I am currently battling the self-doubt that plagued my Fall semester, constantly comparing my work to my peers convincing myself I am not enough. I am attempting to rebuild the resilience to move forward with confidence by opening to my friends separated from DAAP. They have opened my eyes to what I am doing and how I am digging myself into a mental hole. They are currently encouraging me to find what made me chose design in the first place, whether that is drawing or taking time to only be with myself. It is hard for me to realize that I need a charged battery to present as myself and produce good design work. I am currently on the journey of fueling this realization.
My honors experience was achieved through Dr. Platts art history class, Collecting the World: University of Cincinnati Collections, 1819 to Today. I can easily say this was the best class I took this year. Every Thursday we would take a trip to a UC collection, then discuss readings and our experience after. My favorite visit was to the UC Surplus Museum, where we saw countless works of art. The piece that stood out to me was a 1972 mixed media by my Aesthetics Professor, Dennis Puhalla. For my final reasearch project, I decided to recreate this piece in my own style while also considering the design fundamentals Puhalla taught me this past year. I used Adobe Illustrator and a secondary color hierarchy to complete this work.
A unique experience I had my first year at the University of Cincinnati was working for the University Honors Program. Spring semester I worked for the UHP Design and Media Team. My responsibilities were mainly social media and website related. This experience was valuable in correlation to my career and financial situation. I further learned how to manage multiple projects, time management, and what to prioritize. I am stocked to be returning to the position in the fall.
A unique experience I had in highschool was being able to serve my all-girls highschool as School President for three years. I was responsible for representing my grade and school while simultaneously leading meetings, liaising with administration, and effectively instituting school wide communication. My senior year, I lead two collaborations with a near by highschools: raising over $3,500 for Leukemia Research alongside St. Ursula Academy and collecting a school record of over 15,000 cans of food in support of St. Vincent De Paul alongside St. Henry.
I learned the importance of genuine relationships with my peers and mentors, and how to be a leader in important situations. In the height of Covid-19, my peers looked towards me as an example of how to act and repsonse to difficult situations with kindness. Along with establishing clear rules and expectations, my school was able to stay in-person for majority of the 2020-2021 school year with minimal cases.
