I am a junior in high school and I have been a Girl Scout for over 10 years. While spending time with students in self-contained special education classes at my high school, I realized that these students are often left out of different aspects of high school life. This made me ponder about how people are excluded from things based on age, race, gender, ability, etc. For me, the Meriden Public Library (MPL) has always been a calming and happy space where anything is possible and everyone is welcome. It is an important community resource that more people need to utilize. The MPL has just undergone a full renovation. However, the courtyard was not included in the project. My goal for this project is to renovate this large, enclosed courtyard, making it an inclusive, accessible, positive space for anyone regardless of abilities. It will not only reduce stigma, but inspire others to make more accessible spaces where everyone can learn and grow. In addition, studies show that having an accessible outdoor space benefits the mind and body tremendously.
To do this, I will work with numerous community partners and install artwork, plants, and seating that elevate the 5 senses and encourage group activity. My hope is that this inclusive space will encourage new programs, group activities, and healthy relationships. The last element is leading different group activities including a rock painting class. Participants can leave their rocks in the garden or bring them home. These will display positive messages and provide a fun experience for everyone, and the opportunity to leave their mark in the garden. Plans include social events and new programming for youth with special needs and their families through the Children's Department. A plaque will recognize all community partners and indicate the project as a Girl Scout Gold Award project will be included. This courtyard will be a symbol of inclusivity, social engagement, new friendships, and a positive place for everyone in the community.
