Developed under the auspices of John Aspinall as a heavy 0-8-0 goods engine comprised of standard components, they were the most powerful engines in Britain upon their construction. No. 91 was the first of such built in 1898 at Horwich.

GWR 3292 Class 'Badmintons'
Amongst the finest proportioned classes of 4-4-0 designed under William Dean, and the earliest sign of Churchward's influence in Locomotive design, the Badmintons sported a squared Belpaire Firebox opposed to the round-top boilers common then, and were the first class on the GWR to do so, serving as the prelude to boiler developments soon to come on the railway.

A RARE BREED:
James Stirling's'221 Class, and 187 Class.
During 1888-89, Hugh Smellie rebuilt 8 older 187 Classes to suburban service tank engines - not a totally unfamiliar, yet seldom seen type on the G&SW lines.
(the 221 is essentially a scaled up 187, for reference)
