Code of Conduct
Throughout the workshop, we would like everyone to adhere to the following code of conduct, which draws upon both the CSCW code of conduct, as well as guidelines for SIGCHI online spaces:
Zoom norms
We encourage you to rename yourself with preferred name, pronouns if you are comfortable sharing, and affiliation.
Please raise your hands on Zoom if you would like to speak, and wait until you are called on. Feel free to put your comments in the chat liberally. We also encourage turning on video for ease of understanding and lip reading.
Interpersonal interactions
Treat everyone with respect and consideration, including when they have opinions that may be different than your own. Respect others’ identities in full, for example, using their specified pronouns.
We encourage constructive criticism and critique. But this is a supportive space. Be hard on systems and soft on people. Be patient, kind, and supportive.
People’s lived experiences are not up for debate, their ideas, policies and suggestions are. The lines between these two are not always clear so give each other the benefit of doubt. Grace, sensitivity, and validation go a long way toward creating community.
Access to education about needs around identity, social justice, and cultural sensitivities are not equal. Not everyone has access to the bodies, knowledge, or communities that you do. There may be times when language is insensitive or just doesn’t feel right to you. Take each other in good faith and (if you have the capacity) correct the individual.
Respect one another’s right to engage or disengage in conversation.
If you misgender, incorrectly pronounce, or unintentionally discriminate against someone: identify the issue, begin your comment again with the error corrected, and continue.
Prohibited content/actions
Do not use, post, or discuss potentially harmful content. If you must, first provide a warning to participants. This includes but is not limited to discriminatory content (racist, sexist, genderist, classist, ableist, etc.) and offensive, stressful materials.
Harassment will not be tolerated, including comments that target people based on their identity, unwanted attention or communication, or advocating for such behavior.
Addressing violations
If there are any concerns when in breakout rooms, you can use the “Ask for help” feature (question mark icon on bottom menu) to request help from Neha, Naveena, or Azra anonymously. In large group discussions, you can direct message Neha, Naveena, or Azra via the chat.
Should any issues or violations arise, Neha, Naveena, or Azra will remind participants of the code of conduct. In the case of harassment, discrimination, or problematic content, we will publicly acknowledge the issue, name the violation, and use our judgment on what to do next (be that providing a warning or removing the offending party).
We have a waiting room, but if there is any Zoom bombing, we will suspend all video and audio and try to quickly remove the intruder.
