Khieron Rice’s favourite thing about farming is knowing where his food comes from. The livestock farmer, who raises cows and sheep, works diligently to ensure that he produces quality food, not just for himself and his family, but for his customers as well.
This Youth Farm graduate started raising cows straight out of secondary school. His uncle, upon seeing his nephew’s dedication to the craft, gifted him some Black Belly sheep and he has slowly been expanding his herds since then.
He credits the Youth Farm programme with helping him engage in better farming practices, raise his animals with more efficiency, and work well with others. The programme also inspired him to view farming as more than just a hobby, but as a viable career and business opportunity.
Khieron follows a strict routine on his farm, a practice he learned during his time at the Youth Farm programme. His days begin at 5 in the morning, when he goes to check on the animals. He cuts grass, gives them fresh water, and cleans and sanitizes their surroundings. He works elsewhere during the day, however, he heads back to the farm at 4 in the afternoon to continue his routine. If necessary, he cuts more grass, feeds and waters the animals again, and ensures that all is well before heading home.
Khieron hopes to expand his farm to include chickens, pigs, and rabbits. He also plans to begin using aquaponics to grow produce.
