Futsal Fever Around the World

Futsal is an indoor version of regular soccer. Its name is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word Futbol or Futebol, and the French or Spanish word Salon or Sala, which can be translated as indoor football.

It is played between two teams of five players each, one of which is a goalkeeper, also with a ball that is smaller and heavier than in regular football. Therefore, the focus is more on improvisation, creativity and technique.

Some professional players, especially Brazilian players such as Ronaldinho, Robinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Pato and many more, started playing futsal to improve their basic skills. Pele, Zico, Socrates, Baby and other legendary Brazilian superstars developed their skills by playing street futsal.

The skills and techniques developed in this game can be seen in Brazilian outdoor exhibitions on the regular football pitch. In Brazil, most children are more likely to start playing football than traditional football because it takes up space and many schools in Brazil do not have a playing field for traditional football.

The first Futsal World Cup took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1982, with Brazil taking first place. They retained the trophy at the second World Cup in 1985 in Spain, but lost to Paraguay in the third World Cup in Australia in 1988.

FIFA then became the direct sponsor of the event in 1989 in the Netherlands and 1992 in Hong Kong, both won by Brazil.

The third FIFA World Cup took place in Spain in 1996 and was first referred to by FIFA as the FIFA World Cup. The fourth FIFA World Cup took place in Guatemala in 2000 and the fifth FIFA World Cup in Taipei in 2004.
