Characteristics of the Gut Microbiota in Japanese Macaques: Insights from Comparison with Taiwanese Macaques

Gut microbiota is known to be shaped by both host genetic and environmental factors, especially diet. However, it remains unclear which factor has a stronger effect on gut microbiota composition. Using 16S rRNA gene (V3âV4 region) sequencing, we compared the gut microbiota of Taiwanese macaques (Macaca cyclopis) with previously published data on Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) (Lee et al., 2019), across three environmental conditions: wild, human-disturbed, and captive, to assess whether host-species or environmental effects play a stronger role in shaping gut microbiota among closely related species. Our comparative analysis revealed that gut microbiota composition clustered more strongly by environmental factors than by host species. This suggests that, similar to Japanese macaques, Taiwanese macaques also exhibit environmentally driven shifts in gut microbiota, which may contribute to their adaptation to diverse habitats. This study demonstrates that closely related species can harbor similar gut microbiota compositions under similar environmental conditions.

Growing Up Actively and Socially: Early Social Interactions with Non-Mother Individuals in Wild Japanese Macaques on Yakushima

Although infant social interactions have been studied across various primate species, infants are often viewed merely as immature beings in need of care or as passive recipients of attention from older conspecifics. In my thesis, I aimed to demonstrate that primate infants also actively engage in such interactions. Yakushima macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) offer an excellent model for studying infant interactions with non-mother individuals, as their relatively high within-group tolerance creates favorable conditions for frequent infantânon-mother interactions. To investigate patterns of these interactions, I observed infant macaques from a troop of wild Yakushima macaques inhabiting the western coastal area of Yakushima Island. Using focal and all-occurrence sampling methods, I collected behavioral data on interactions between 12 infants and their non-mother partners, recording both the partnersâ behaviors and the infantsâ responses directed toward them. In Study 1, I defined excessive infant handling as persistent infant-directed behaviors despite infantsâ negative reactions and found that it served as a social bridging strategy with higher-ranking partners, involving the selective use of accessible infants and supported by maternal tolerance. This result suggests that strong natal attraction reflects less despotic relationships among females. In Study 2, I found that infants responded discriminatively to partnersâ behavior and social attributes, showing greater tolerance toward non-rough behaviors, close kin, maternal grooming partners, and individuals ranked lower than their mothers. These reactions may mitigate risks, strengthen bonds with familiar individuals, and conserve energy in interactions, highlighting infants as active agents in shaping their social relationships.
