Katelyn Workman, "Shape in Motion"

When working from observation, conflict arises between freedom of response and distinct, strong shapes. This project will explore the implications of shape and mark in relation to the illusion of depth and the composition of edge within a work. Outside of color, shape has the largest impact on the perception of depth within a painting.  Like an egg, shape can function in a variety of ways within the context of a painting. For example, eggs can function as a base to hold a cake together or be scrambled and then broken apart by mark. The tools used to cook an egg are equivalent to the exploration of works on paper that push the response and buildup of shape within a piece. I am expecting this will lead to a greater tolerance for larger geometric planes or less reliance on shape in the achievement of perceived space in a 2D work.
