Sheet cane is pre-woven and is held in place by a border spline that fits in a groove around the border of the caned area
In hand caning the chair seat or back has holes drilled in the wood frame around the perimeter and the cane is hand woven through each hole to create the pattern. This is most common on antique furniture.
