In March, our group attended the Microbiome Interactions in Health and Disease conference, hosted by Wellcome in Hinxton, Cambridge. We received lots of feedback on our work, and Juwairiyah and Linda were awarded prizes for best poster(s)! You can find the posts here and here.
Sidhant was busy at the Southampton Science and Engineering Festival (SOTSEF), where he showcased a computer game he developed to teach children about the effects of different diets on gut microbes.
New publication from our group is out. We used a bioorthogonal drug-labelling approach to explore how the gut microbiota interacts with the Parkinson’s drug entacapone. Link for publication here.
Congrats to Linda on her first authorship publication!
Juwairiyah's presented results from the first half of her PhD at the School's yearly PhD symposium, and received a prize for Best Talk! Congrats Juwairiyah, well deserved!
Check out the SoCoBio blog article highlighting the work of Linda Guantai and our team on the public engagement activity at Winchester Science Centre!
Our group spent the day at the Winchester Science Centre telling kids how important and cool are microbesµbiomes!
Juwairiyah superbly presented results from the first half of her PhD at the Applied Microbiology International Conference MMEG 24.
Linda Guantai presented the first results from her PhD at the Poster showcase organised by the Institute for Life Sciences, University of Southampton. Linda's PhD project is co-funded by the BBSRC SoCoBio DTP and the Institute for Life Sciences.
William Lane presented the results of his 10-week internship in our lab at the Poster showcase organised by MyCareer (UoS). Amazing professionalism and work for an undergraduates' project.
Juwairiyah's Poster received a prize for Best Poster at the School of Biological Sciences PhD Symposium. Congrats Juwairiyah, well deserved!
Wonderful visit to the Photonics Center, Boston University, to meet collaborators and finally see the instruments where many of our samples have been analysed! Many thanks to Dr Ji-Xin Cheng, Yifan Zhu, Xiaowei Ge and Zhongyue Guo for their hospitality.

Megan Green (2nd from left) and Michelle Lin (right) have just joined us for an 8-week summer internship.
Megan and Michelle are 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students and will be investigating how do gut microbes cope with non-antibiotic drugs. On their first day, the weather was nice enough for us to enjoy lunch outside with Juwairiyah.
New preprint out!
In this study we show that two widely prescribed nervous system targeted drugs (entacapone & loxapine) at therapeutic concentrations have a large impact on the gut microbiome. We further show that supplementation of the Parkinson’s drug entacapone promoted expansion of pathobionts with virulence potential.
