On April 26, 2006, all worship services will include a celebration and dedication of the solar panels.
Yes, we now have solar panels on the roof of Bartula Family Life Center. The system designed by Longhorn Solar is 182kW from 376 panels. It is expected to produce over $14,000 worth of electricity annually for twenty-five years. It will reduce GHG emissions associated with the church's electricity use by as much as planting thirty acres of oak trees would. The installation is the result of a $200,000 gift. The church now has a special account for additional solar panel donations.
On November 3, 2025, Longhorn Solar installers completed the brackets that hold panels on Bartula Family Life Center. On November 15 the panels were in place. The solar panel installation was connected to the church's electrical system and was approved by ONCOR and the City of Richardson in January, 2026. The switch turning on the system for the church was thrown on February 9, 2026.
United Methodist Church worldwide and through local groups has invested in a wide variety of solar projects to reduce greenhouse gases for the stewardship of creation, to save money, to bring power to neglected people, and to model our care for God's creation.
Here is a map of solar projects large and small from UMC churches and agencies around the world. This map was made in 2024, and many other projects have been completed since then
Here are slides of over forty UMC-related solar projects.
More than a hundred are listed in this spreadsheet, but the list is not exhaustive.
