The previous segment of books I did not do a lot of editting but made sure all the script was correct basically did it raw. But still a little editting was required at the beginning of the segment & at the end basic cleanup. The more I voiced the easier it got.

Then i was totally surprised that the past client had not gotten his book done yet. Now i have the confidence to do it. it is 10 chapters of 115 pages. I know most voice artists stay away from audiobooks because of their length & I was going to. I want to make sure my quote is good PER RAW HR. ( NARRATION ONLY NO EDITS) The Non-Union rate of the Global Voice Acting Academy is $225 PER HR. $225 X 5HRS. = $1125 i added 2 hrs on for editing.

3) Music and sound effects are not the responsibility of the narrator. Most audiobooks only have music in the opening and closing credits, if that much. Unless an audiobook is being produced as an audio drama or full cast recording, it usually does not have sound effects.

I am extremely new to narrating audiobooks. So new in fact I have never done one. I have put samples up on my ACX profile and had an author just recently ask me to audition. She is asking my pfh rate. It is a 65,000 word book.

You should have experience BEFORE you represent yourself as a professional narrator who can complete the job. About half of the general population has never listened to an audiobook. If their first experience is bad, they may never come back to the medium.

Garage Band is not a suitable DAW for audiobook narration. It is better suited for hobbyist musicians creating short pieces, hence its name. Even Audacity is an improvement over Garage Band, but I would steer you to Studio One, Ocen Audio, Reaper, or Adobe Audition because of their punch-and-roll capabilities.

B) Non-fiction work often requires substantial pronunciation research. You should either include that time in your rate or negotiate a separate charge for it. Most authors on ACX are not aware of the difficulties in audiobook production and probably would balk at paying a separate charge for research.

Just yesterday I was searching Audible for LONG books to read! Thank you for the list and the reviews. I am currently listening to Becoming, and will be adding East of Eden by Steinbeck and several others from your list. Just in the nick of time.

My favorite long audiobook is Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Roughly sci-fi, on what might happen if the Earth were suddenly not livable, good science, good plot, well written. Another by Stephenson, Reamde, a high-tech global adventure story. I liked them so much, I listened twice!

I have to offer honorable mentions for the Harry Potter series books, not only are the latter books quite long Jim Dale does an immensely amazing and satisfying job making the characters and story come alive. Also the Inheritance Cycle books by Christopher Paolini are also great and range from 16 hours to 31 hours.

I may or may not have complained when a friend chose Warmth of Other Suns in our book group. I went to pick it up at the library and scoffed that it was over 600 pages- but I really enjoyed it on audio, and was sad when it was over. Great choice.

There are so many fantasy books to add to this list! The Mists of Avalon clocks in at 50 hours and 50 minutes, The Wise Mans Fear at 43 hours and Storm of Swords at 47! Great penny per hour value ?

I use audiobooks a lot as they help me to get to sleep (focussing on listening to a story helps to stop me thinking about other stuff), but often I fall asleep while reading - which is fine - I just 'rewind' to the last place that I remember and then continue listening on my commute the following day. After listening 'Upgrade' by Blake Crouch (10 hours long), I was surprised to see I had reached my 15 hour audiobook limit - I suspect the time listening to the audiobook is based on total time (including time I have to 'rewind') - rather than unique time - so basically the time of the audiobook. I get that you have to calculate this somehow - I just wonder if there's a better way to do it to make it a better experience for people who use audiobooks in the same way as I do and will often fall asleep, then have to 'rewind'. e24fc04721
