What is "Fulfill His Dream?"
What is "Fulfill His Dream?"
Fulfill His Dream is a movement by Christian churches to restore the original vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He fought and advocated for a "thoroughly integrated society" that he called "the beautiful community." He spoke of this vision in his famous "I have a dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963.
The beautiful community he dreamed of was one of total integration: in housing, schools, buses, restaurants and churches.
Unfortunately when he died much of his dream died with him. Politicians arose that did not want to see communities integrated. They saw that integration could divide their base and so lose votes in their districts.
While segregation may be wise to maintain political power, it is in direct opposition to the teachings of Jesus Christ and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King.
"I think it is one of the tragedies of our nation, one of the shameful tragedies that 11:00 on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours, if not the most segregated hour in Christian America. I definitely think the Christian church should be integrated, and any church that stands against integration and that has a segregated body is standing against the Spirit and the teachings of Jesus Christ, and it fails to be a true witness. BUT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE CHURCH WILL HAVE TO DO ITSELF."
REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
MEET THE PRESS, APRIL 17th, 1960It is time for the Body of Christ to rise up and take up the cause of Christ and resurrect the true dream and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King. As he said, "This is something the Church will have to do itself."
We can no longer wait for politicians to bring unity to our communities. As Churches and pastors did when they started the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's, the Church must again take the lead and usher in a mighty revival of love and peace for all Americans.
What did Jesus say?
What did Jesus say?
We can begin by getting back to the teachings of Jesus Christ. When we say we have a "Black Church", a "White Church" or "Hispanic Church" it is spiritually like returning to the days when there were public drinking fountains for "White Only" or "Colored Only". We know there is only one fountain that we are to drink from...Jesus Christ...the fountain of Living Waters. Churches are to be God's dispensaries for this Living Water. Is it right to have them divided by race? Hispanic drinking fountains? Asian?
Jesus said: "By this they will know you are my disciples, by the love you have for each other." When we are segregated, the churches "fail to be a true witness" as Dr. King said. Our dividing up by race speaks the opposite of love for each other. In heaven we see everybody worshiping together. Jesus said for us to pray that His will be done "In earth as it is in heaven". Ne segregation is in heaven... and so no segregation should be on the earth.
What can the Church Do?
What can the Church Do?
Pastors and leaders can preach and teach their congregations what the Bible says. They can encourage people of other races to come and make them feel welcome. If the Body of Christ will open their arms of love wide to all races a mighty revival will sweep America such as the world has never seen.
Celebrate Martin Luther King Day by inviting someone of another race to your church.
Celebrate Martin Luther King Day by inviting someone of another race to your church.
A simple way to integrate your church is to make MLK Day about inviting someone from another race to celebrate and worship with you that Sunday. Just show this video (available on Youtube) to the congregation starting 2 or 3 weeks before. Provide your members invitation cards they can hand out to people of other races they know. Congregations that have done this have doubled in attendance that Sunday. Honoring Dr. King in this way helps to FULFILL HIS DREAM.
