Who are we?
We are FTC #5188 - Team Phoenix, an all-girls robotics team of students in grades 6 to 11. As a community team, we’ve been actively involved in various FIRST leagues for many years. FIRST® inspires young people to become leaders and innovators in science and technology through engaging, mentor-based programs that develop skills in science, engineering, and technology, while fostering self-confidence, communication, and leadership. Our mission is to spread the spirit of FIRST to female students in our community by serving as role models in STEM and challenging gender stereotypes.
Why Phoenix?
The name Phoenix may sound cliché, but it holds special meaning for our team. Each of us has a deep-rooted history in FIRST Robotics, beginning our journey with FIRST Lego League (FLL) Junior as part of FZN Robotics. Initially, we were three separate teams, eventually merging to form our first FLL Challenge team. However, during the COVID pandemic, our team was forced to disband. In the 2022 season, we came together once again, rising like a phoenix from the ashes. This rebirth gave life to "Team Phoenix," not only as an FLL Challenge team but also as an FTC team. We competed in both leagues in 2022 and 2023 seasons. This season, we continue as an FTC team while retiring our challenge team.

What is FTC?
FTC, also known as FIRST Tech Challenge, is a branch of FIRST competitions for grades between 6th and 12th grade. Each team is only allowed to have up to 15 team members and they are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.
Girls in FIRST is our storytelling initiative that highlights the journeys of girls in FIRST programs. By sharing their achievements, challenges, and voices, we aim to inspire more girls to join FIRST/STEM programs, break barriers, and lead with confidence.
