Az-Tech Robotics welcomes mentors from our community who are interested in supporting students as they design, build, and program competition robots.
Mentors play a vital role in helping students develop engineering skills, confidence, and problem-solving abilities. You do not need to be a robotics expert—many mentors simply bring curiosity, experience, and a willingness to support students as they learn.
FIRST Tech Challenge teams are designed to be student-led with mentor guidance. Mentors help students think through engineering problems, develop new skills, and connect classroom learning to real-world applications.
By volunteering as a mentor, you help inspire the next generation of engineers, programmers, and innovators.
Mentors come from many backgrounds, including:
engineers
programmers
technicians
machinists
educators
college students studying STEM
parents with technical interests
Even if you do not have a technical background, mentors can still help with:
project organization
outreach planning
documentation
team logistics
Helps students organize STEM demonstrations and community events.
Typical activities:
helping plan outreach events
connecting the team with community organizations
supporting student presentations
Helps the team build partnerships and fundraising opportunities.
Typical activities:
connecting with local businesses
assisting with sponsorship outreach
advising on project planning
Supports students with robot design, engineering concepts, or programming.
Typical activities:
helping students troubleshoot robot mechanisms
reviewing designs
guiding programming discussions
Mentor involvement is flexible. Some mentors attend meetings regularly, while others help occasionally during build season or special events.
Typical meetings occur after school during the robotics season, with additional outreach events throughout the year.
Mentoring robotics students provides the opportunity to:
inspire future STEM leaders
share real-world knowledge
support hands-on learning
be part of a collaborative engineering environment
Many mentors find the experience both fun and rewarding.
Interesting in mentoring with Az-Tech Robotics?
We would love to hear from you.
