Ultralight aviation (called microlight aviation in some countries) is the flying of lightweight, 1- or 2-seat fixed-wing aircraft. Some countries differentiate between weight-shift control and conventional three-axis control aircraft with ailerons, elevator and rudder, calling the former "microlight" and the latter "ultralight".

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, mostly stimulated by the hang gliding movement, many people sought affordable powered flight. As a result, many aviation authorities set up definitions of lightweight, slow-flying aeroplanes that could be subject to minimum regulations. The resulting aeroplanes are commonly called "ultralight aircraft" or "microlights", although the weight and speed limits differ from country to country. In Europe, the sporting (FAI) definition limits the maximum stalling speed to 65 km/h (40 mph) and the maximum take-off weight to 450 kg (992 lb), or 472.5 kg (1,042 lb) if a ballistic parachute is installed. The definition means that the aircraft has a slow landing speed and short landing roll in the event of an engine failure.[1]

In most affluent countries, microlights or ultralight aircraft now account for a significant percentage of the global civilian-owned aircraft. For instance, in Canada in February 2018, the ultralight aircraft fleet made up to 20.4% of the total civilian aircraft registered.[2] In other countries that do not register ultralight aircraft, like in the United States, it is unknown what proportion of the total fleet they make up. In countries where there is no specific extra regulation, ultralights are considered regular aircraft and subject to certification requirements for both aircraft and pilot.

In Australia, ultralight aircraft and their pilots can either be registered with the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA)[25] or Recreational Aviation Australia (RA Aus).[26] In all cases, except for privately built single seat ultralight aeroplanes,[27] microlight aircraft or trikes are regulated by the Civil Aviation Regulations.

The United States FAA's definition of an ultralight is significantly different from that in most other countries and can lead to some confusion when discussing the topic. The governing regulation in the United States is FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles. In 2004, the FAA introduced the "Light-sport aircraft" category, which resembles some other countries' microlight categories. Ultralight aviation is represented by the United States Ultralight Association (USUA), which acts as the US aeroclub representative to the Fdration Aronautique Internationale.

Advancements in batteries, motors, and motor controllers has led to some practical production electric propulsion systems for some ultralight applications. In many ways, ultralights are a good application for electric power as some models are capable of flying with low power, which allows longer duration flights on battery power.[35]

In 2007, the first pioneering company in this field, the Electric Aircraft Corporation, began offering engine kits to convert ultralight weight shift trikes to electric power. The 18 hp motor weighs 26 lb (12 kg) and an efficiency of 90% is claimed by designer Randall Fishman. The battery consists of a lithium-polymer battery pack of 5.6kWh which provides 1.5 hours of flying in the trike application. The company claimed a flight recharge cost of 60 cents in 2007.[35][36]

A significant obstacle to the adoption of electric propulsion for ultralights in the U.S. is the weight of the battery, which is considered part of the empty weight of the aircraft despite efforts to have it considered as fuel.[37] As the specific energy of batteries improves, lighter batteries can be used.

Ultralight flying represents one of the fastest and purest ways to experience the joys of aviation. From powered-parachutes and trikes to traditional fixed wings and even amphibians and rotorcraft, ultralights are fun, exciting, and in most cases, remarkably affordable. Flying ultralights is not a step up or down, but a step into a completely different and exciting sector of the flying community.

In the U.S., flying an ultralight doesn't require a license or a medical certificate of any kind, providing the aircraft meets the Federal Aviation Regulation called Part 103. Part 103 defines an ultralight as an aircraft that meets the following criteria:

The purpose of this article is to help you learn some ways to keep your pup comfortable at night, and prevent them from destroying your gear in the process. With gear becoming lighter and lighter each year, the technology allowing for this is often thin, lightweight fabrics that can tear easily from rocks, sticks, thorns or those dog nails if you are inclined to bring Fido along for the hike.

One of the many unique experiences this area offers are ultralight tours. Ultralights are very small and light aircraft. They usually have an open cockpit with no more than 2 seats. Further, the engine and propeller are typically positioned in the rear of the aircraft. Because of the safety protocols ultralights must undergo to be operated legally in the States, they are rarely flown here. That said, Mexico is a different ball game.

Upon our arrival, we did have some concerns about the safety risks associated with flying in such a small aircraft. Neither of us had flown in ultralights before. That said, after a few drinks, any reservations about those concerns quickly slipped away. We soon found ourselves walking down the steps to the beach to speak to the pilot. As of writing this, you have a couple options. For $20 USD per person, you can fly around the beach at La Fonda. For $40 USD, you can visit two beaches. Mitch and I both choose the more economical option. We paid the pilot and were then quickly briefed on how the ultralight works. Basically, the pilot sits in the front seat and you sit directly behind him as he operates the ultralight.

If you're here, it's probably because you're looking to get started on your first backpacking trip. Or maybe you're just trying to find ways to lighten your load while being light on the wallet. In any case, I've curated this introductory guide and packing list of affordable and ultralight (UL) backpacking items that are held in good favor of the ultralight backpacking community. A lot of the reason for creating this guide was to reduce the barrier-to-entry for my friends and coworkers looking to lighten their load and get outdoors. The primary portion of the packing list is comprised of items which are affordable, lightweight, and of good quality. Ideally, this can all be done on a shoestring budget of around $500.

Being "ultralight" is as much a mindset as it is an evolving marketplace. What that means is that there are plenty of methods to go ultralight more minimally than what this guide provides, but those items and techniques are generally a better fit for well-seasoned backpackers who know exactly what they want and how to go about doing it. That's not what this guide is about. While you may find one or two relatively simple DIY items, this packing list is more about finding affordable off-the-shelf items that are of good quality. No, I am not the first to make a list of this variety, but I am confident that this guide is one of the most comprehensive you'll find of the sort.
