Welcome to the world of PCBs! In this lesson, we'll learn about some essential terms related to PCBs and PCBA.
Printed Circuit Board:
A printed circuit board, or PCB for short, is a board that electrically connects and mechanically supports electronic components. It's made up of a non-conductive substrate, often fiberglass, with a layer of copper on it. The copper layer is etched to create pathways that connect the components and allow for the flow of electricity.
Printed Circuit Board Assembly:
A PCB assembly, also known as PCBA, is the process of connecting electronic components to a printed circuit board. This process involves placing components on the board, soldering them to the copper traces, and testing the final product.
PCB Design:
PCB design is the process of creating the layout for a PCB. It involves selecting components, placing them on the board, and routing connections between them. The resulting design is used to manufacture the PCB.
ASCII:
ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It's a character encoding standard that assigns a unique code to each character, including letters, numbers, and special characters. ASCII is used in nearly all modern computers.
Automatic X-ray Component/Pin Inspection:
An automatic X-ray inspection machine uses X-rays to inspect the structural integrity of welded connections beneath the surface of the PCB. It's a non-destructive way to ensure the quality of the PCB.
Self-Diagnostic Equipment:
Self-diagnostic equipment is a method of electrical testing that allows a device under test to test itself outside of specific hardware. This process is often used in embedded systems to check for faults and improve the reliability of the system.
Surface Mount Technology (SMT):
Surface mount technology, or SMT, is a method of attaching electronic components to the surface of a PCB using solder paste and a reflow oven. This method allows for a higher component density and faster production times than through-hole technology.
Through Hole:
Through-hole technology involves drilling holes in the PCB and inserting components through them. The components are then soldered to the other side of the board. This method is often used for larger components and for components that require a stronger connection.
Pick and Place:
A pick and place machine is a robotic assembly machine that quickly and accurately places surface mount electronic components onto PCBs. This machine can place thousands of components in a matter of minutes, greatly reducing the time and cost of production.
Reflow Soldering:
Reflow soldering is the process of melting the solder paste used to attach electronic components to PCBs in a reflow oven. The solder paste melts and forms a strong bond between the component and the PCB.
Bill of Materials (BOM):
A bill of materials, or BOM, is a listing of all the components required to assemble a PCB. This list includes the part numbers, quantities, and manufacturers of each component.
Gerber Files:
Gerber files are an industry-standard file format used to describe the layers, traces, and other details of a PCB design. These files are used to manufacture the PCB.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM):
Design for Manufacturability, or DFM, is the process of designing a PCB for ease of manufacture. This involves considering the components, their placement on the board, and the assembly process to ensure that the PCB can be manufactured efficiently and with a high level of quality.
Automated Optical Inspection (AOI):
Automated Optical Inspection, or AOI, is an inspection process that uses cameras and software to check for defects in assembled PCBs, such as missing components or misaligned parts. This process is automated, which makes it faster and more reliable than manual inspection.
