This project started for one simple reason: I needed to stay accountable. I launched this Instagram page to document my weight-loss journey and keep myself motivated during a bit of a gap between roles.
Because I’ve spent the last few years working as a Social Media Manager, I couldn't really help but look at it through a professional lens. What started as a personal diary quickly became a bit of a creative playground for my video editing and strategy skills.
In the first 6 days of the account’s existence, the page achieved:
262 Followers (Built entirely from scratch)
23.4k Total Views (Across 7 Reels and 1 Carousel)
13,605 Unique Accounts Reached
667 Total Interactions (558 Likes, 40 Comments, 29 Saves)
With a follower conversion rate of 1.92%, this project demonstrates more than just "viral" luck; it proved a sustainable reach strategy. By focusing on high-quality hooks and authentic storytelling, I successfully converted cold viewers into an engaged community, maintaining a 1.7x view-to-reach ratio that indicates high replay value and content resonance.
The most interesting part of this project in the beginning was that it didn't feel like "work". Because I was documenting a personal journey, I skipped the overthinking and went into autopilot, applying the skills I’ve built up over the years.
I use my own editing style to keep people watching without needing a fancy setup, just my Samsung phone and CapCut. My main rules were:
Start with a hook: Every video starts with a clear headline or quick movement to stop people from scrolling past.
Keep the pace up: I trim out the boring bits and kept the cuts tight. If a shot felt a second too long, it was gone.
Choosing the right audio: I pick classical tracks that suited the cheeky, slightly sarcastic mood of the video, helping the algorithm find the right people.
Instead of trying to make everything look like a polished commercial, I kept it real.
I shared the "Day 1" struggles and the uncurated parts of my life, narrated with my own cynical, sarcastic, Bridget-Jones-esque tone that made it relatable but also authentic to me.
People connect with people. By being honest about the process, I gained 262 followers who are actually rooting for the journey.
Even though I was on autopilot, I was still being strategic:
Consistent output: Posting 7 Reels in 6 days kept the momentum high.
Searchable captions: I wrote captions that felt like a message to a friend, but I made sure to use keywords so people looking for "weight loss" or "wellness" could actually find me.
It's much easier for me to be social from behind a screen, so this step was
This project proved that my natural approach to social media (the stuff I do instinctively through literal years of content creation experience) works. It’s about creating content that feels human but is backed by a solid understanding of how people use Instagram. It’s not about "gaming" the system; it’s about making videos that people genuinely want to see.
Keep up the pace: I’ll be sticking to the daily posting schedule. In these early days, staying consistent is the best way to keep the algorithm on my side and keep the momentum building.
Checking the data: Now that I have actual data to work with, I’ll be keeping a closer eye on my insights to see when my new followers are actually online. It’s about finding that "sweet spot" for uploading so the content gets seen by as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.
Getting stuck into Stories: Reels are great for finding new people, but I want to use Stories to actually chat with the community I’m building. I’ll be using polls and Q&As to make the page feel more like a two-way conversation rather than just a broadcast.
I want to see if I can turn this "six-day sprint" into a long-term community. It’s a great way for me to keep testing new editing tricks and see exactly what it takes to scale an account in 2026.
