FSE Students' Awards 2021

Following the success of the ChemStudent's Awards 2020, which was held on 7th September 2020, we are delighted to announce that the Chemistry PASS Scheme will be initiating the FSE (Faculty of Science and Engineering) Students' Awards 2021.

The nominations for the Awards Ceremony will be closing on 30th August 2021 [apart from those mentioned with a earlier date], and the ceremony will be held in mid - September, where the winners will be announced for each category.

To be eligible for a nomination, the staff member should be a current staff member in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, from any of the Departments in the School of Natural Sciences and School of Engineering. The eligible Departments are: Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Sciences, Department of Computer Science, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanics, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Department of Materials, Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

There are no restrictions of the number of nominations an individual can make. Nominations from both students and staff are accepted, including self - nominations. The same person can be nominated for different awards. When nominating, please make sure the criteria for the award is satisfied in your nomination, as the nomination alone will be only responsible in determining the winners.

Excellence and Innovation in Student Learning Support

Criteria:

The nominee can be an academic or non academic staff member.

Enhancing the student learning experience. For example: by arousing curiosity to stimulate and inspire learning, organising and presenting resources cogently and imaginatively, recognising and supporting diversity of student learning needs, drawing on relevant research, scholarship and professional practice and engaging with and contributing to established literature or building your own evidence base for future publication

Excellence and Innovation in Learning and Teaching Practice

NOMINATIONS FOR THIS AWARD IS GOING TO CLOSE ON 30TH AUGUST 2021, 5 AM UK TIME.

Criteria: Developing excellence – the nominee’s commitment to his/her ongoing professional development with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support. For example: evidence of the ongoing review and enhancement of individual practice, engagement in scholarly activity and professional development activities, the review and enhancement of individual practice and contribution to improvements in the student learning, teaching and assessment experience.

Excellence in Academic Leadership

Criteria:

The nominee can be an academic or non - academic staff member.

Raising the profile of excellence and support for student learning within the University and beyond if appropriate. For example: by contributing to the development and leadership of colleagues in promoting student learning, contribution to departmental/faculty/University/national initiatives to facilitate student learning, and/or support towards meaningful and positive change with respect to pedagogic practice, policy and/or procedure

Outstanding Academic Advising

Criteria: Has provided exceptional guidance, feedback throughout the academic year. He/she may have offered regular support through face – face, email or via telephone, provided individualised support both in terms of academic and general life, and has provided in-depth guidance and information to the student(s).

Most Outstandingly Developed Learning Module of the Year

Criteria:

Please make sure to include ALL staff member's names involved in delivering the course in the nomination form for this award.

The nomination should demonstrate how innovative techniques were used to deliver the material, and describe how organisation, structure and communication within the course aided in student understanding. Where appropriate, reference to Unit Survey results would be appropriate, though if these data is not available, any supporting evidence which you might consider is relevant is acceptable.

Lecturer of the Year: School of Natural Sciences

Criteria:

Please make sure that the Staff Member nominated is from the School of Natural Sciences.

The nominee provides students with information about how they can locate up to date resources to aid with their academic development, uses innovative methods of teaching that involve more than just the use of PowerPoints, whilst delivering entertaining and interesting lectures using progressive teaching methods. The nominee also use their own research and/or valuable experiences to enhance students' learning, motivates and inspires students to reach their potential and is enthusiastic and passionate about the subject being taught to make learning fun. The nominee is easy to approach regarding course related issues and provides clear, well-structured and timely feedback that is easy to understand.

Lecturer of the Year: School of Engineering

Criteria:

Please make sure that the Staff Member nominated is from the School of Engineering.

Most Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)

Criteria:

The nominee Inspires confidence and encouraging students’ interest in the subject or discipline, demonstrates their enthusiasm for their subject and delivering content in a way that challenges & motivates students and shows commitment to their role and supports students by being approachable.

Outstanding Support and Pastoral Care

Criteria:

The nominee can be an academic or non - academic staff member.

The nominee offers pastoral, personal and academic support e.g. encouraging students to improve grades and achieve their full potential, is always easy to approach and easy to contact and signposts students to appropriate departments/agencies and contacts students to find out if the issue has been sorted. The nominee is proactive and understanding to the diversity and ever-changing needs of individual students, raises awareness of internal opportunities available to students to help develop transferable employability skills, encourages students to take part in extra curricula activities and work placements, builds strong personal relationships with students and regularly catches up with students throughout the academic year to see how they are progressing.

Excellence in Research Supervision

Criteria:

NOMINATIONS FOR THIS AWARD IS GOING TO CLOSE ON 30TH AUGUST 2021, 5 AM UK TIME.

The nominee is efficient with providing feedback on topic ideas and drafts of chapters, responds to emails in a timely fashion, helps you to formulate ideas about the content of your project and offers guidance with the structure of your work and directs you towards useful resources. The nominee also offers support and advice to develop your skills as an independent researcher, Instils confidence in your abilities as a researcher, helps you to think critically about your work and show enthusiasm for your research.

The Social Contributor

Criteria:

Available for both academic and non - academic staff.

The nominee has immensely contributed to development of social activities for students and other staff members, within and outside of the university. The nominee has encouraged students to participate in extra curricular activities, provided support where required and helped and guided students to organise new and already existing events within the university.

The Hero Award

Criteria:

Nominations for this award is no more accepted. Please do not submit any further nominations as they won't be considered.

This award is given to an individual who has gone the extra mile to support their students and fellow staff members. They have contributed to development of academic community, encouraged commitment to sustainability, and also is working significantly towards enhancing equality, diversity and inclusivity within the department and the university. The nominee also have provided significant support to their personal tutees, course students during this rather unusual year, and also have been an individual who has been approachable towards any problem for any student.
