Frontier Galvanizing
Hot-Dip Galvanizing Service
Frontier Galvanizing (legal name, Frontier Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Inc.) has established itself as a trusted leader in corrosion protection for more than 75 years. From its Buffalo headquarters, the company provides hot-dip galvanizing services that support industries that shape the essential structures of modern life. Its work reinforces major infrastructure, including bridges, transportation corridors, utility grids, stadium complexes, and public service networks.
A Company Shaped by Growth and Innovation
Through steady expansion and a dedication to improvement, Frontier Galvanizing has transformed from a modest local operation into a respected regional and international partner. This progression is anchored in its commitment to craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and long-term client relationships. Industry honors support this legacy, including the Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Award from the American Galvanizers Association in 1998 for the Franklinville Bridge #31 in New York.
A Strong Start on Buffalo’s Austin Street
The company’s origins date back to 1948, when it began providing galvanizing solutions for manufacturers and contractors from a small plant on Austin Street. From the beginning, Frontier Galvanizing became known for reliability and practical problem-solving. As industrial development accelerated in the late 1960s, the original facility could no longer meet the expanding needs of infrastructure projects, prompting the need for a larger, more capable site.
A Turning Point Through New Ownership
A significant shift occurred in 1970 when Ray V. Pierce and a group of shareholders purchased Frontier Galvanizing. Ray recognized the limitations of the Austin Street location and envisioned a company capable of delivering advanced services at a much larger scale. Soon after the acquisition, the business relocated to the former General Drop Forge Corp. foundry at 1740 Elmwood Avenue. This move provided increased floor space, a more efficient workflow, and the foundational capacity needed to support the region's growing demands.
Strategic Expansion Through Family Leadership
Ray was later joined by his brother, Lewis G. Pierce. Together, they launched a series of strategic land acquisitions that expanded indoor production areas and outdoor laydown capacity. These improvements enabled Frontier to handle larger steel assemblies, accommodate higher-volume orders, and manage multiple large projects simultaneously. As the company’s capabilities expanded, so did its client base, which grew to include state Departments of Transportation, major utilities, energy providers, and large infrastructure contractors. The company’s workforce eventually reached about 40 full-time employees, reflecting its significant operational growth.
Advancing Quality Through Modern Technologies
Frontier Galvanizing has continually invested in modern technologies that support quality, efficiency, and environmental stewardship. Advancements such as continuous flux treatment, hydrochloric acid regeneration, and hex-free paintable passivation have enhanced coating uniformity while reducing waste and environmental impact. The company’s active membership in the American Galvanizers Association and the Galvanizers Association UK and Ireland provides consistent access to research, regulatory updates, and best practices. This involvement ensures Frontier remains aligned with the highest technical and environmental standards in the industry.
Major Projects That Showcase Capability
Frontier’s work is represented across numerous landmark projects throughout North America. The company has galvanized steel for the Daytona Motor Speedway, the Peace Bridge linking Buffalo and Fort Erie, Boston’s Green Line Extension, the Queensboro Bridge in New York City, and the Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium. Its reach extends globally, with millions of pounds of galvanized steel shipped from Buffalo to Australia, Jamaica, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. These international exports demonstrate the level of trust placed in Frontier’s quality across regions with their own strong galvanizing industries.
A History of Professional Recognition
Industry recognition has been an ongoing theme in Frontier’s story. Awards from the American Galvanizers Association highlight the company’s ability to meet stringent specifications while delivering solutions that are both functional and visually consistent. These achievements reflect the company’s disciplined processes, skilled workforce, and dedication to delivering results that meet or exceed client expectations.
Leadership Carrying the Legacy Forward
Today, Frontier is led by Lewis G. Pierce and his son, Robert V. Pierce. Their leadership blends long-standing values with forward-thinking strategies. They continue to strengthen process control, integrate new technologies, build enduring relationships with clients, and explore emerging markets that support long-term stability. Their approach ensures that Frontier remains grounded in its history while staying responsive to modern demands.
A Commitment to Future Excellence
Frontier Galvanizing’s long-term vision is anchored in the principles that have guided it for more than seven decades. The company remains committed to delivering exceptional product quality, fostering a safe and supportive workplace, upholding environmental stewardship, and pursuing continuous operational improvements. Whether reinforcing a stadium’s structural frame, protecting the steel of a transportation corridor, or supporting utility infrastructure, Frontier Galvanizing brings precision and dedication to every project. As the company moves forward, it remains focused on providing solutions built to last, ensuring its work and reputation endure as enduring as the steel it protects.
