About EDA
Edinburgh Direct Aid International
Edinburgh Direct Aid International
Edinburgh Direct Aid (EDA) is a volunteer-led humanitarian charity based in Scotland, dedicated to delivering practical help and hope to communities affected by conflict, poverty, and displacement.
Since their founding in 1992, they have responded to crises across the globe, providing emergency aid, supporting long-term development, and working directly with people on the ground to ensure that help reaches those who need it most.
What sets EDA apart is their hands-on approach. Their volunteers don’t just raise funds—they pack lorries, travel to crisis zones, and work side-by-side with local communities.
From supporting refugees in the Balkans and the Middle East to running educational and youth programs in Lebanon’s refugee camps, their work is driven by compassion, integrity, and a belief in the power of direct action.
Edinburgh Direct Aid (EDA) has been actively engaged in numerous impactful humanitarian projects in recent years:
Supporting partners in Gaza (click to donate)
EDA has a long association with Gaza, beginning in 2009 when - working with Scottish Parliament volunteers and the Glasgow Central Mosque - we took a small convoy of medical supplies through Sinai into Gaza. More recently, we have been working with Palestine Medical Relief Society (PMRS) and partnered with Refugee Biryani & Bananas (RBB) to make direct deliveries of food and other essentials from Egypt into Gaza via the Rafah crossing. EDA will continue to do whatever we can whether it be by assistance in cash, food delivery or specific medical supplies as advised by our Medical rep in Gaza, Dr. Elessi.
Mobile Trauma Support for Ukrainian Children (click to donate)
Recognising the psychological impact of war on children, EDA facilitated the delivery of a specially equipped vehicle to Ukraine. This mobile unit, fitted with disabled access, serves as a space for trauma therapy, including counseling and music therapy, reaching children in various affected areas.
Celebrating Humanitarian Spirit Through Art
In June 2024, EDA unveiled a vibrant mural on their warehouse in Granton, Edinburgh. Created by Mexican muralist Draya Madú and artist Eva Paredes, the artwork symbolizes unity, resilience, and the spirit of humanitarian aid. Funded by Edinburgh Council’s Diversity and Inclusion Fund, the mural serves as a visual testament to EDA's mission and the global communities they support.
These projects exemplify EDA's hands-on approach and dedication to providing direct aid to communities in need. Their efforts continue to make a significant impact in areas affected by conflict and displacement.

Christine Witcutt (1941–1993) was a retired teacher from Wishaw, her passion for education and music helped her students thrive. In 1993, driven by a desire to aid those affected by the Bosnian conflict, she and her husband, Alan, volunteered with Edinburgh Direct Aid.
Tragically, on July 5, 1993, she was killed by a sniper while delivering humanitarian aid in Sarajevo. Her commitment and compassion for others inspires everyone at EDA to this day.
Her legacy endures through the Christine Witcutt Memorial Fund (a sub-section of EDA), which supports children with disabilities in Sarajevo.
