Troubled Lake Cascade — and Friends Rise to Defend It

The Beauty We Love is at Risk.                        Doing Nothing is Not an Option.

Lake Cascade is one of Idaho’s great treasures and the heart of our community — a place where people come to breathe, to fish, to paddle, to gather family, and to feel connected to something bigger than themselves.  But beneath that beauty, a dangerous scourge is lurking.  Toxin‑producing cyanobacteria blooms that can occur almost anytime have turned into a recurring menace, triggering Health Advisories and shaking confidence in the lake we love.  Friends of Lake Cascade formed because doing nothing makes it worse.

Locals, seasonal residents, and tourists are concerned — and they should be.  Lake Cascade influences public health, tourism, property values, drinking‑water security, and the legacy we leave our kids and grandkids.  When the lake becomes unhealthy, the entire community feels it.

Since 2018, our volunteers have stepped forward as a science‑driven, community‑powered force for healthy water.  We combine technical expertise with local knowledge, practical problem‑solving, and a commitment to transparency.  Through education, monitoring, and collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, we help people understand the watershed and the nutrient‑pollution sources fueling toxic blooms.

How We Fight for Our Lake

• Community outreach — Building awareness, ownership, and stewardship across the region.

• Water‑quality monitoring — Early bloom detection, rapid alerts, and seasonal tracking.

• Substandard wastewater systems — Identifying and advocating for nutrient seepage reductions.

• Animal waste in riparian zones — Protecting shoreline buffers from contamination.

• Dust, erosion, and stormwater pollution — Promoting Best Management Practices, keeping sediment and nutrients out of our lake.

• Fertilizer usage — Encouraging practices that nourish lawns without harming waterways.

• Water temperature — Tracking warming trends that accelerate bloom formation.

• Wetlands restoration — Protecting nature’s own filtration systems.
