Copse Hill Spinney is a compact, one-acre (0.40 hectare) woodland reserve situated at the junction of Copse Hill and Woodside Road in Purley.
The recorded history of the site as a dedicated green space dates back to 1929, when the land was sold to the Urban District Council of Coulsdon and Purley for £880. The sale was arranged by the property developers responsible for building the surrounding Purley Manor Estate.
Rather than being converted into residential plots, the woodland was designated as a protected bird sanctuary and subsequently closed to general public access to preserve its natural habitat. Characterised predominantly by mature Beech trees alongside Birch, the heavy canopy overhead naturally limits dense ground vegetation, creating a distinct, quiet woodland environment.
Today, the site remains recognized under the London Borough of Croydon's Local Plan as a key local natural green space and protected wildlife area. It continues to serve as an important sanctuary for local birdlife and native wildlife within the urban residential fabric of Purley.
According to BTO website - the following important British Woodland Birds are in our area and may use the site.
