1893 "Bird's Eye View"
The Shinn property was not included in the 1878 Thompson and West, even though it had been finished in 1876. However, it appears in this 1893 Illustrated Album for Alameda County on page 57. The description of the Shinn ranch is on page 61. Possibly this booklet was available at the Columbian Exposition 1893.
The "Bird's Eye View" from 1893 of the Shinn property shows some of the same buildings and areas that are there today:
The Shinn House
The Tankhouse
The "Circle Garden" is to the right of the tankhouse.
The greenhouse is presumably the small building to the right of the tankhouse. It is no longer there
The packing shed can be seen and still is in the park, but moved a bit.
The redwoods planted in front of the Shinn barn.
The original Shinn barn
Behind the property, in the distance, is where Alameda Creek was and where the original cottage was still located, along with the "China Camp."
You can see a tiny train in the distance where the town of Niles is located.
There were 10,000 fruit trees: cherry, apricot, peach, almond, pear, apple, prune, orange, and walnut.
There were also some lemon, filbert, fig, olive, and pecan trees. The avenue of pecan trees was planted around 1878. Are those the trees at the entrance?
Also carob trees, jujube, loquat, date palms, fan palms, shaddock, honey locust and many other kinds of trees, including pistachio trees "which bear the nuts from which the 'green' ice cream is flavored."
