Hayward Fault
According to some inspecting geologists, this crack in the curb is a sign of the Hayward fault.
The Hayward Fault runs through our Fremont neighborhoods and parks.
The fault runs through the park from the children's playground, near or through the Japanese Garden, and through the barnyard.
We could say that we have the only Japanese Garden on the Hayward fault but the Hayward Fault may also run through the Hayward Japanese Garden.
Interesting references regarding the Hayward Fault and the the Niles Cone
1915 Study by Clark of the Niles Cone "Mr. J. C. Shinn reports that during the severe earthquake of 1868 his father's house, standing directly on the fault line, was torn in two and the eastern pa1t dropped about a foot below the western part." In 1868, the Shinn cottage was down by Alameda Creek. This is the same cottage that is at the park today.
Alameda Creek Watershed Historical Ecology Study San Francisco Estuary Institute has a great history or our Creek and all sorts of current things, too.
