Nasce nel 1941 a Los Angeles da un incontro tra John G. Martin, dirigente della Heublein drink Company, “Jack” Morgan, proprietario di Cock’n’Bull Products, che produceva Ginger Beer, e il presidente della Pierre Smirnoff (divisione di vodka della Hublein) Rudolph Kunett. Questi tre si trovavano nel ristorante di Jack Morgan, che aveva appena ricevuto il primo carico della sua produzione di Ginger Beer. E allora provarono una fusione tra la vodka, il limone spremuto e il ginger beer. Entusiasti del risultato 5 minuti dopo chiamarono il cocktail Moscow Mule.
