Modding is the process of modifying the code / visuals / general content of a video games. The practise is ever present in all kinds video game communities and primarily enables player customization and personalisation, allowing for a customised experience alongside the game's base content.. Moreover, different websites and services (such as the Steam Workshop) allow for the easy sharing and distribution of mods.
Throughout my time modifying video games, I have noticed that the pracitisecan teach any kind of generalist important things about game development and teaches entirely new skills.
Here are some benefits to modding:
Modding enables creative problem solving
Modding encourages working in and adapting to new project environments
Modding teaches new software and skills
Modding challenges professionals to adapt to an already existing game, both visually and mechanically
As a busybody with a thirst for knowledge (and need for a creative outlet), I greatly enjoy modding video games in order to learn new things in my free time.
I believe that in order to truly understand a piece of media like video games, one must familiarise oneself with all of its aspects. Learning how to adapt to the workflow of a specific game, getting a better grasp on its systems and design, etc, is in my opinion the perfect way to immerse myself in the art form.
Furthermore, I have the habit of personalising games by adding my own content and publishing it online, allowing me to partake in the ecosystem of their communities.
