Fresno High School Alumni Dinner

May 4, 2024

What a memorable evening it turned out to be at this year's FHSAA Annual Alumni All-Class dinner! Despite Mother Nature's untimely display of power with high winds and rain hitting Fresno just three hours prior to the event, Angelica Figueroa, our Dinner Coordinator, swiftly secured an alternative venue at the Fresno High gymnasium, with the generous assistance of Ricardo Ramirez, owner of the Academia de Arte Flamenco (The Flamenco Art Academy) nearby.

Before the dinner, attendees gathered for a delightful beer and wine social, courtesy of Ramirez's academy. El Dorado Restaurant's caterers saved the day with their delicious fare, served with flair by none other than the members of the Fresno High Marching Band, under the guidance of Corey Reynolds, FHS Band Director.

Following the scrumptious meal and some helping hands to clear the tables, the band and color guard treated everyone to an enchanting performance of music and dance.

Huge thanks to all involved for making this event a success once again, and a special appreciation to Angelica Figueroa for her dedication and effort in making it all happen!

6 September 2023 - FHS RING FOUND IN PORTLAND, OREGON

A few weeks ago, this website administrator was contacted by a Mr. Steve Tallman, of Portland, Oregon.  He obviously was not a FHS grad, but he found something belonging to an FHS alumnus.  When it was all said and done, I asked him to share his story on how it came to pass: (note: some parts edited for context)

I used to sell a few things on Ebay (part time fun for a retiree). My daughter saw a guy near me that wanted to sell a few things on Ebay and she asked me ...if I would look into it. So I did. It was a local guy that cleared out apartments and houses of junk...for a living. He lived in an apartment and was getting crowded out with the stuff he had accumulated.

I met him ...and we agreed to see if I could sell some of his stuff. This was 4 or 5 years ago prior to COVID. I did so for about 6 to 8 months and found out it was not working out on my end, so I met with him and proceeded to tell him...we needed to part ways.

He asked me to look through some stuff he had just picked up (one last time)...and see if any of it was worth selling? In the box, was a Fresno High class ring belonging to a T. Sabatino from the FHS class of 1990.  It was indicated that the owner was also a cross country runner.  I asked the guy what he was going to do with it and he said "sell it!"  I knew it would not fetch much...so I convinced him that I figured I could find the rightful owner and that he should not sell it.

I looked online and found Thomas (the T stood for Thomas) on Facebook.  I had just recently joined (I know...always late to technology is my mantra) so...I was unsure how to Messenger people. I sent him a text and waited...nothing. Ultimately, I realized he either did not use Messenger or thought it was a scam.

Fast forward 4 years...and the ring was still in my possession.   I figured I would try the Fresno High School alumni website...and..the rest is history.

Steve then contacted me at the FHSAA email address and shared his story.  I did some digging around and found the same results via Facebook, but fortunately I was able to contact Thomas and gave him the information that he needed to get his ring back.  It took a couple of days, but Steve and Tom met up and Tom was able to go home with his ring!

11 April 2022

We received an email from Jan Kaufman, who informed us of the passing of her husband and FHS alum Marty Kaufman (Class of 1957) on March 31, 2022.  He was well known in the professional racing circuit and was a legend in his field, much like many who have achieved fame in sports, from that generation of young people who walked the halls of Fresno High in the 1950's.

This is posted here as there is no page information for the Class of 1957 at this time.  Here is her message to us, along with a link to his media tribute.  Her contact information is posted below (with her permission) and would love to hear from Marty's friends:

Marty Kaufman - 1939-2022

This is Jan Kaufman, Marty's wife.

Marty passed away on March 31, 2022 at home peacefully and gently.  He was preceded by his first wife Mignon and second wife Susan.

Marty and I have been friends since 1971.  I met him and Mignon at the race track where Marty was the Chief Steward for the Sports Car Club of America races.  Marty and I became a couple in 2006 and spent our life involved in professional sports car racing (IMSA, Trans-AM, etc.) until his retirement from racing in 2010.  I've copied and pasted an article below that explains a bit about what he did as the Race Director with IMSA including the 10 years he was the #2 man in charge of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.  He was the #2 man only because he did not speak French.  Marrying a man who was such a dear friend was the frosting on the cake.  We had an amazing life together, traveled around the world and my son gave him two grandkids.  Although Marty and Mignon never had children my son grew up knowing him and he embraced my family, as they embraced him.  He was known as Papa to our grandkids.

I've included a link below to an article written about him that shows the respect he garnered as well as the respect he gave to all who raced under his guidance.  I hope you enjoy it.  It is written by a longtime friend of ours with quotes from several well known folks in Sports Car Racing.
