The Fresno State Hockey Club was originally founded in 1991, providing students with an organized opportunity to compete in collegiate hockey. The program operated for over two decades before undergoing a transition in 2013, when it became a club team competing at the ACHA Division II level.
During this time, the team partnered with Fresno City’s allegiance program and played primarily as an exhibition team. The Fresno Ice Dogs were later created to continue the effort, but the program faced ongoing challenges. Limited resources, early morning practice schedules, and the demands of academics made sustaining the team difficult. Initially, the program focused on a men’s division, with plans for a future women’s team that never fully materialized.
After several years of inactivity, Fresno State Hockey was officially revived in 2023, now competing at the ACHA Division III level. This time, marking a renewed effort to reestablish the club and provide students with a structured platform to represent the university in the sport once again. The program has expanded its efforts to serve as a development and filter team for the Fresno Junior Monsters program, creating a stronger pathway for local players. It has also placed a renewed emphasis on community involvement, building deeper relationships with student-athletes, the university, and Gateway Ice Center.
Looking ahead, Fresno State Hockey aims to strengthen its competitive foundation, expand outreach within the Central Valley hockey community, and ultimately grow opportunities for both men’s and women’s programs. By fostering partnerships, developing talent, and deepening its ties to the school and local community, the program is committed to creating a lasting legacy for future generations of Bulldog hockey players.
